I'm a little shocked that it took 15+ years of forum jokes about Corbett's thong before somebody created the apparently obvious thread about why he wore one.

Yeah, Corbett was always screaming for a thread due to his very lack of same. Originally I might’ve guessed the “thongs”, as we shall call them, perhaps represented a waning legacy in attire from old school to new but then we later have cheeky Burns, Papke etc. to be getting on with. It seems for a good number of years it was an individual either or option as to what they chose to wear. Jim Jeffries in his hey day had a far better physique to show off than spindly Corbett and Fitz but he opted for duly modest shorts/tights. For the more brazen fashion icons of the sport, they even painted shorts in over the photos, so I guess some took exception even back in the day unless it was done much later in the piece for those not so thrilled with having the avante garde exhibitionism of the naughty nineties thrown in their face. Interesting side note, very early photos of Jeffries show him with a closely shaven head, ala John L Sullivan etc. This suggests perhaps early participation in a number of bare knuckle contests, the shave being to prevent hair pulling. Of course, in the event of bare knuckle fighting, Bob “Fabio” Fitzsimmons never had need for such preventive grooming.
