The more I watch Miguel Cotto the more I respect his boxing ability

If you watch during the Judah and Mosley fights, this guy is a very smart fighter, and not the one minded offensive pressure fighter you would come to expect. During the Judah fight, he actually would fight off the back foot against Judah whenever Judah tried to mount and assault, then when Judah was done Cotto would go in and beat him up. At one point Judah responds to a Cotto barrage but throwing some looping uppercuts which nearly catch him but Cotto would simply dance away from the coming assault, reset himself then attack again. I saw this more emphatically displayed against Mosley. You see this what makes him a superior boxer to the Castillos, Hattons, Margaritos of the boxing world. He wont stand in and take punishment if he doesnt have to, something that wasnt evident earlier in his career where he would simply try to bang with his opponents with his leaky defense which would have been easy pickings for Floyd. But as he grows the probability of him making a real go for Floyd becomes more apparent.

Hell yeah, hell yeah. He will out smart margo no doubt. Margo is a ring general but if he cant have his way with you he will just swing for the fence. When Cotto beats him to the punch over and over he will get sloppy and get hit more.

Judah didn't put up a fight, I get nothing from that. Cotto just did a better job of mentally fracturing Zab than anyone. Within minutes Judah had folded up into the fetal position. Cotto broke Judah's will within moments, and took his will to win within minutes.

In the Mosley fight Shane looked very rusted, and was right there to be hit standing straight in front of Cotto with almost no head movement. If you watch Cotto in that fight Miguel looks great, if you watch Shane in that fight Mosley looks like he has early stages of boxer's dementia. Shane would get hit with 2 or 3 power shots and then just lock his head right back into the same position to get rocked again. Mosley is well past it based on what I saw.

This fight with Margarito is the one where you truly put Cotto's skill to the test. Margarito's output and endurance will show Cotto's true colors. Margarito isn't the best fighter persay, but he's relentless.

Sounds like the typical skill boxer vs the wild brawler. All I will say is that I cannot wait until next Saturday to see how it will unfold. Will it be an upset like Tarver-RJJ or a confirmation of P4P status like Pacquiao-Diaz? We will all finally know soon and why it is so.

    Good thread.

As much as I have said that I think Margarito will crush Cotto -- and I still hold to that prediction -- Cotto is a lot better than I initially thought he was. He has exceptional timing and a great will to win. He also has very good technique and he deserves to be highly regarded and respected.

before when i was watching cotto back when he was a prospect i thought he's just a fighter with good offensive skills all about power but he's getting better as a boxer, he's pretty good actually and almost a complete boxer. His only downside perhaps is his suspect chin just as what other people called but i don't buy that, considering how he always finishes good in the end

It would seem highly likely that Cotto will outbox Margarito in the middle of the ring and brawl when he's on the ropes. Cotto's speed will frustrate Margarito.

I can't get enough of Cotto.. watching his fights never gets boring. Not just his boxing skill/ability is fun to watch, but every single time he throws a punch, it's thrown with such amazing accuracy, force, and bad intention. He's a calculated killer in the ring. Watching him destroy Margarito is going to be beautiful.
