Lewis vs Tyson. Mike was done after the first round. Toward the end it verged on torture porn, painful for me to watch.
For me a beatdown is a systematic dismantling of steady punishment, growing slightly by the round but with no particular round looking hugely worse than the others. In my lfetime, the most complete beatdowns I can think of are; Duran - Moore, Hagler - Sibson, Tyson - Biggs, Toney - Barkley, Bowe - Gonzalez and Chavez - everyone but most notably Rosario, Mayweather 2,Taylor, Haugen and Camacho. Julio's lack of true one punch blowout power cost all those men a whole lot of hurt and Julio had the stamina and the single-minded focus to just keep going at the same pace, pouring on the pain.
Holmes vs. Cobb was such a beat down that it made Cosell quit broadcasting professional fights...at least that's what Howard said. As for Cobb, he invited Larry out for a beer after the fight.
Yeah, that was one hell of a beat down. No disrespect to Cobb, but for Homes, it was literally like punching a heavy bag for all he was worth over 15 rds. The bag might swing this way and that but it NEVER goes away. At times it almost appeared AS IF Holmes was thinking - “okay, what do I do next? Alright, for want of a better idea, I’ll just keep punching.” Though he took it I thought Cobb appeared a bit distressed (just mentally/emotionally) due to the punishment he took. Not a KO puncher per se but Holmes could still hit very hard.
Johnson v Jeffries. Though a beating is understood, unless you look closely, the older film might not convey the true degree of the beating (via 4 or 5 ounce gloves) or it’s reality is somehow lost due to being so far back in time. Even several days after the fight, reporters allowed to interview Jeff had to be cautioned as to the still swollen, misshapen appearance of Jeffries face (possibly having gotten even worse after the fight). And, it seems, Jeffries was still not fully 100% cognisant or properly ordered in his thoughts when answering questions.
It was terrible. I don’t necessarily buy Holmes’ claim that he took it easy later in the fight for humane purposes. Even when Ali was badly hurt at points later in the fight, I believe Holmes was trying hard for an outright KO. When he couldn’t achieve that, Holmes was only left with beating up on Ali some more and he had to know that whatever the fans thought of him before, they would think far worse of him unless he backed off a bit at least for appearances. At least in my eyes, for very much the greater part of the fight, Larry fully beat on Ali and tried for a KO when he thought Ali was ripe for same. That’s no criticism on Larry in terms of how he fought. That was his job and due right but I just don’t believe he eased on the pedal as much as he claimed. He really wanted to wipe the shadow of Ali from his own (Larry’s) career.
The St.Valentines Day Massacre. Ray Robinson just teed off on Lomatta the last few rds of that fight Duran vs Moore was a brutal beat down, that probably ruined Moore. Hagler vs Mugabi, Mugabi was pretty much finished after this fight. Curry vs Mccory, though it only lasted a few rds, Curry's dominance was displayed almost from the opening bell. Ali vs Terrell. Terrell should've called Ali by his adopted name. 15rds of torture from Ali
