I’m curious about famous boxing sites posters have visited. These might be famous fight sites and arenas, gyms, museums, graves, former homes, or any other notable boxing locations. Personally, I haven’t been to many. I did go to cards at Madison Square Garden and the Norfolk Scope, and I saw a ballgame at the old Comiskey Park, but that’s about it. Edit: I also went to a couple of events at the San Diego Sports Arena. So, who’s been around and where have you been?
I took Eder Jofre to The Olympic Auditorium and we went inside last month. That’s one of the most iconic venues ever and where he won the bantamweight title in 1960. It’s now a Korean church. The Forum in Inglewood. Another iconic venue. MSG of course. I went to LA Sports Arena and saw it’s last fight between Herrera & Lundy. I’ve been to Romania Gym in Mexico City too. I’ve also been to Bally’s Gym on El Centro off Hollywood Blvd which used to be the Hollywood Legion.
York Hall, Bethnal Green, East End of London. Only holds about 2,000, but is a great, iconic venue. Not a bad view anywhere, even has a balcony ! Always a fantastic atmosphere especially if a boxer has a few fans cheering him on.
A little aside since you’re in 707. Did you do any training in Eureka? In the eighties, I trained for a couple of years under Danny Rodriguez and Sid Flaherty at the gym at the Municipal Auditorium, which later became the Ink People art studio.
Joe Gans grave is in a rundown South Baltimore cemetery not far from where I work… It’s clearly visible from the road. So far I’ve resisted the temptation to hop the fence and take a tasteless selfie.
The entrance to Boston's North End has a statue of its favourite son, the recently deceased Tony DeMarco, who was World Welterweight Champion in the 1950s. That area also has a streer named after him ('Tony DeMarco Way'). I've been done there a couple of times.
