Okay. That’s very impressive. That so called blown up LW won a MW title against a huge Iran Barkley. That so called blown up LW was an ATG who carried his power up. Marvin respected him and fought tactically. Would Marvin have employed the same tactics against Floyd? Again, how confident would Floyd have been in fighting Marvin, when he didn’t have the attributes to beat him, and he never fought at that weight? I’ve researched your question, so you can do me the courtesy of answering mine: Why do you think that Floyd would probably have beaten Marvin? How are Floyd’s 6 southpaw wins relevant? Roy Jones beat 4 southpaw champs. It doesn’t mean that he would have beaten Byrd and Sanders at HW.
1. Mayweather proved that the kind of size advantage he'd give to Hagler wasn't anything he'd be uncomfortable with. 2. Hagler struggled with a blown up Duran and lost to a 160 Leonard. I see Mayweather as better than either. 3. Hagler was typically methodical. In 88, he had slowed down. I see Mayweather simply turning it into a Mayweather style fight and winning.
Floyd has the better pocket defense than Ray. One advantage Leonard had was speed. Not just quickness of foot but handspeed. Ray wasn't sitting down and throwing meaningful punches. He was shoeshine, slapping flurries. Again a cheap tactic showy to the crowd and fans in general. With that said it took tremendous speed to pull it off. @147+ I don't think Mayweather had that kind of speed since he left the lighter weight classes. I dont know that he could throw enough punches to keep Hagler off him. He could take out of Duran's book but Duran had power respectable at least for middleweight.
^What a daft statement^. Mayweather may have proved it against the fighters he fought (although he didn't look all that comfortable against Oscar De La Hoya, in my opinion). How comfortable he would be against someone of Hagler's caliber with a size advantage is a different question; a different test for Mayweather to prove himself against. Mayweather never went in against the caliber of opponent that he'd be in against with Hagler. Hagler did. Hagler didn't struggle with Duran. What is a "Mayweather style fight"? One in which successful pressure fighters don't get fairly scored and the judges lean heavily towards incessant defense as the primary scoring criterion?
Hagler by decision. Hes way too physicallly strong for a blown up Mayweather. And Mayweather was not a busy fighter at 147 and wouldnt be at 160.
Mayweather threw straighter and shorter punches than Leonard. A straighter punch or shorter punch has the same effect as increased handspeed (gets to the the target quicker). I dont think Mayweather would need shoeshining to win.
Let's be honest. Most GOOD fighters even those at lower weights, would have taken Hags the distance and many would have won. When someone says he was still dangerous, well, what was dangerous about him? He was too slow to be a danger and Floyd would have slipped a vast number of his slow, wide shots, countered expertly and quite possible won the decision
He struggled with flat footed Duran because one of his eyes was almost swelled shut and bleeding. Duran beat him to the punch many times. Moreover, I had Duran ahead going into the 14th, as did the judges, Had he not won the last two rounds, he would have lost the fight
So, Hagler has evidence of having been hit by Duran and this signifies he struggled? I don't think so. You wouldn't need all the fingers on one hand to count the number of rounds Duran won clearly. They were few. Still, there's no accounting for what the judges were looking at (a very good effort from Duran, I suppose) so, just as well Hagler put on a clinic in the last couple of rounds (as he had in earlier rounds). Hagler didn't struggle. It was a relatively straightforward, 15-round victory for him, against a great, great fighter.
"Struggling" with Duran is hardly a red flag. If anything, beating a decent version of Duran strengthens the argument for Hagler. Mayweather was never in Duran's league.
look at his face as compared with Minter, Sibson, Obel, etc. not a scratch and scoring wise, many of the rounds were close and I too had Duran ahead after 13, wondering if Hagler was going to let his title reign slip by I had never seen Hagler take so many shots. It was a sub par performance by Hagler and the version Leonard faced was far worse. I give Floyd a real chance against a lifeless, unmotivated Hagler
Hagler was as big as Errol Spence Jr. Hagler's tactics could be questionable. I believe the fight would be closer than many classic fanatics believe but IMO Hagler would simply outwork Mayweather.
