Teo, Tyson, Garcia, Porter, Haney... what is it with 1) a serious lack of quality trainers that don't have sons that fight? 2) Men living though their sons? Boxing is becoming hard to watch right now. It's like WWE at times.
Most fathers in boxing are inadequate, low IQ and very agressive at press conferences. You forgot Ruben Guerrero, haha
Yeah it’s pretty bad with a lot of these guys. They don’t know when to shut up and they act like there the ones who are the star athlete. It’s literal insanity….. one day when the kids are older there gonna resent there fathers big time. A good father son combo was Enzo and Joe because they were both learning as they came up and while they did have there moments and arguments they were definitely better together then apart. Other then that I can’t really think of too many fathers who haven’t tried to steal there kids thunder. The people who come to mind for me are Garcia Sr, Floyd Sr, Guerrero Sr, And the worst of them all Lopez Sr. Floyd pretty much shut his dad down and put him in his place, the others did not.
With respect to Teo, I firmly believe that his dad contributed strongly to his defeat. His advise is ****, and seems to be more delusional than his son. Hard to not fall for your own hype, when your corner has fallen for it harder than you have. Teo needs to do some soul-searching and look for a new camp. His father is dead weight.
Fathers have historically been a problem in boxing. Every couple decades or so we get a rash of them. Then everyone learns the lessons those in the past learned. Then they are gone for a while. Then they all return and screw up their sons again. The 80s had Bobby Czyz's dad, Gerry Cooney's dad, Howard Davis Jr.'s dad, Tony Tucker's dad, Roy Jones Jr.'s dad, and on and on. Teofimo Lopez's dad is a mess.
Yeah it's pretty pathetic really. Although, I would remove Tyson Fury from that list as John Fury is genuinely hilarious at times and he seems pretty level headed when you actually watch him in interviews, unlike Lopez Snr. for example.
No way to know really. Serge is right that Enzo seems to be the one, but who knows what Joe would have done with Buddy McGirt in his corner? Roy needed to move on from his father for very specific reasons, but he was made to repeat repeat repeat from early childhood. Over and over again. If it wasn't for his father he probably wouldn't have been Roy. Who knows what these guys would have been without 100% attention from a very early age? Very far from ruining these guys, these fathers might be making them. I do feel you are right though that it can become tiresome. I wish these fathers would allow some extra room for some new news sometimes, that they new when to let go of the reins. Just to see.
The father's you mentioned seem to do well when the kids are young. They invest the time necessary to keep the kids in line. The father's are there all the time, which is needed badly. That being said, the father's can only take the kid so far. Once they start hitting the big time, pops seems to lose focus and buying into the hype. They lose the ability to be objective and critisize their boy.
You could also add Eubank Snr to that list. It's hard to list dads that have the right balance like Enzo.
The best and the worst Enzo Calzaghe - Great character who was genuinely funny (RIP) Papachenko - Class act who unlike many boxing fathers doesn't seek the limelight at all. Quite the opposite in fact Kenny Porter - Class act Jose Benavidez Sr. - Class act Teofimo Sr. - Low class thoroughly unlikeable piece of trash Angel Garcia - Another piece of trash but at least he is entertaining and funny sometimes Big John - reformed thug but he's a great character, entertaining, funny albeit and he can be very unrefined and he crosses the line sometimes for sure ''He came out of my sack''
