This is often overlooked in boxing. A good chin can actually make your health worse if you aren't responsible on defense and take it for granted. A long drawn out beating over 12 rounds taking multiple flush bombs is far worse than a quick early KO or stoppage.

Brain Atrophy, too many shots to the head. At the end, his younger brother took care of Jerry and Mike, both needed help dressing themselves.

I remember the Norton fight, he didn't look good but fought back and landed some good shots he just didn't have enough at that point. Even though he won his next 3 his fate was sealed as he took a lot of punishment. His last fight as a cruiserweight in 92 could have gotten him killed and I recall reading where he got his teeth knocked out in that fight, geez he was 47! That was a crime letting him fight.

I remember an article (that I can’t find anywhere) on the start of that “comeback” where Jerry was getting into fights in the gym. He had a fight postponed because a trainer cut him in a brawl. This was the year of that last fight. in the time between this incident and the last fight he’d found another trainer and opponent. So he was well off the rails and in a bad place leading up to that terrible match. There was a photo of Jerry and he looked really old. Much older than 47. Really craggy face.with his dukes up. Hair all combed back like he had in the 1960s. I guess the guy needed saving from himself. What can you do?

When Jerry fought "smart fights" early on waiting for they other guy to make a mistake, and countering some arsenal, the fans nearly booed him out of the ring, he had a great give and not nessasarily take style, and the LA brass nearly booed him out of the ring, so he came back as a slugger in 1969! Course it was great when Ali did it then.-THAT WAS COOL!

He died at around the same time as Archie Moore, to the extent that it was commented on.

That is a case study of how two boxing careers can turn out differently.

Jerry did land a few shots that definitely saw Kenny’s legs dip, I think it happened right at the end of the round though. A prime match would’ve been very interesting.

The guys who made it a point not to get hit seem to be better into old age than those who didn't. Compare Quarry, who didn't know what planet he was on by age 50, to Holmes or Foreman. They both seem like completely normal guys for their age, no signs of brain damage.

Look at the way that Ken Norton (Auto Accident) and Smoking Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali ended up at the very end, those three took too many punches on the Noggin, an example, the famed Rope A Dope.

Holmes had an interesting interview where he said he "wasn't interested in finding out how good his chin was", he took every punch seriously and tried to block or evade it. I think subconsciously he might have been trying to avoid the same bad habits as Ali who took his chin for granted.

Foreman was a slugger but part of the reason he doesn't have slurred speech and is in fairly good shape is because he not only ended most fights early, he had underrated defense and didn't just stand there getting hit on purpose (although he could be lackadaisical in the 70's sometimes being willing to trade if he knew he could land a bomb of his own).

I don’t think anyone consciously decides to depend on their chin (even if that is the reality) I think it’s more a case of “if I can get two good ones in before he hits me once..”. A guy can get to delude himself. He will believe it. Sadly It’s survival.

Larry talks about that in both of his books. He said he doesn't know wtf is wrong with guys willing to just stand there and trade, and that the game is about hitting and not getting hit in return.
