FFS, this again? Once and for all, REFEREES AREN'T METRONOMES. There is no such thing as "long counts" nor short - only consistent or inconsistent ones. As long as the ref isn't wildly deviating from his own established in-fight prececent, giving one fighter disproportionately longer between numerations, there is no such thing as too quick or too slow.
No. There is no regulation or custom that a count has to be exactly ten seconds, and there never has been. It is just a verbal count from one to ten, given in a clear commanding tone.
Weird thing is, I watched the fight live on television when I was 9 years old, and at the time, I thought Buster got a long count...and that's what I thought from seeing it with my own eyes as a 9 year old kid. I didn't actually ever see a replay of the fight until many years, I was probably like 25 when I watched it the second time.....but I had always remembered there being a long count in that fight so I made sure to watch carefully when the KD happened....and after watching the replay I didn't see it as a long count. Since then, YouTube has come out and I've probably watched that fight at least another 10 times over the years. I never saw the long count again
I’ve seen so many interviews where Douglas tries to down play that shot ....it’s kinda hard to tell how hurt he was ...he’s not on wobbly legs ...like Tommy Hearns
Absolutely not. He could have got up. It's obvious, just watch the film. He was quite conscious and getting his druthers. Mike was beaten fair and square, no matter how much people (including him at first) rail against it.
I would say it looked like he was actually counted out. Don King had a genuine gripe but Buster was in good condition whereas when Tyson counted out, he was in no condition to continue.
Yeah Tyson was barely conscious but his first instinct without thinking was to try to grab his mouth piece and somehow get up. Not like Foeman against Ali when he just laid down and got counted out and not because he was really hurt but just too tired.
Mike had a lot of guts! I was really surprised how he could keep coming straight into the jaws of death
