Recreating poll for @CST80 @kirk @Serge @Rumsfeld or @McGrain to merge into this one: https://www.boxingforum24.com/threa...r-vs-anthony-oluwafemi-olaseni-joshua.541131/ Note: nobody get alarmed, this isn't made or even in talks. Just possible for 2021.
@CST80 thanks! ...stupid software overrode the new poll with the old phantom one though. Can you just delete it from the thread tool menu so I can add a new one?
@IntentionalButt Just add one to this one, and I'll merge them together again. It's being a pain in the ass and not even giving me an option to delete the other poll.
@IntentionalButt Alright, one more try. Do the poll again, and I'll move all of the existing posts, aside from yours to this one.
Huh, just tried editing it and hit "submit" and it just stayed the same. Weird. Anyway, was going to headline it: "Bronze Bomber" or "Throwback Fighter"? (he finally got himself a better nickname than AJ...kind of a grandiloquent one to choose for yourself though ) And I was going to put their names in the opposite order to match the thread title. And make the votes publicly visible. Danke schoen!
Wow. Six years ago, Deontay Wilder was the WBC Heavyweight Champion. Anthony Joshua was his #2 contender. And 161 people on this board picked Joshua to knock out Wilder, while only 18 picked Wilder. Joshua didn't even challenge Wilder for the belt. Only three months after Martin got a vacant strap, and despite Joshua's very high WBC ranking, Joshua and Hearn decided to go after Charles Martin and the IBF belt instead.
Good old days... I remember it very well, this was hyped like hell. It was seen as the fight of century. Then all of a sudden, Joshua and Wilder were destroyed by Ruiz and Fury. Nowadays nobody cares about AJ and Wilder.
Five years. 10 successful defenses. Six years later, Joshua still hasn't challenged for the WBC title.
All of a sudden? Wilder lost to Fury five years later. Wilder and Joshua were on a collision course. Both fought on Showtime in the U.S. Wilder was the WBC champ. Joshua was #2. And Joshua bailed on the network and started fighting for vacant belts, so he was no longer rated by the WBC. One of those "let it marinate" scenarios when it would've been better if they all just fought when everything was clicking, This happens so often you'd think these guys would learn their lessons. Would've been great if they started fighting in 2016, and again in 2017, and again in 2018. The earlier you start a fight series or trilogy, the more you can have. instead, Hearn and Joshua do a 180 and go in a completely different direction. Now the only time Joshua fights someone more than once is when some huge underdog upsets him.
I think many people would get excited about a non-championship bout between AJ and Wilder. Hell, make it a Co-Main Event with Fury vs Usyk and you'd have the most exciting night of boxing in several years.
