I'm giving the following a bye (a get outta jail free card to not be included on the poll, since the forum software only enough room on the ark for ten options) - Gemelo, because, well, I like him and goddamn say so - and he at least was somewhat active; Merhy, because okay fine, this was his 'arrival' moment; Charlo, because Montiel was coming off the Mandingo victory and was a ranked contender...which trumps fighting zero times all year, or the likes of freaking Cordova or Ngiabphukhiaw; and Kyōguchi because Aragón at least was ranked and had held WBO champ Bimbito Mendez to a SD in a previous loss. That leaves us with Briedis, Goulamirian, Makabu, GGG, Spence, LSC, GRJ, Inoue, JCM, and Pradabsri as the candidates for most disappointing year. Have at it, polls are open in 5, 4, 3, 2...
I'm still pretty high on teo, but it's obvious they should have taken kambosis more seriously. It was a humiliating loss but he wasn't masterclassed out of there. George kambosis is a great fighter, great timing, but that was a heck of a fight not a one sided beatdown. Teo is still relevant in the sport. Shoulda took the GK Jr rematch in Australia, make his papa proud (Lopez Sr.) In front of 80 000 fans.
GGG hasn't done anything in two years....it's really disappointing...and now with Murata fight scrapped he had one of the worst years...no fight at all in 2021. What belt does he even have?
Russell is the most disappointing fighter in boxing and has been year for 3-4 years, imo. He's a much bigger talent than most of the guys on this list and consistently does nothing. I wish he would get stripped.
I'm most personally disappointed in Briedis, GGG, and Inoue because I like them more than any of the other 7 on the poll. Artur Mann is a wretched challenger to be your only defense in an entire year; Dasmariñas and Dipaen aren't too much better; and GGG just frittered away yet another chunk of his waning prime-adjacency...didn't even have anything rumored until the Murata talks sprouted up in October.
But we could do a separate one about "former champs whose title losses in 2021 were the most shocking and/or devastating blows", with him, Pac and probably AJ being the frontrunners.
Not fighting at all is worse than any result that isnt a loss, draw, or a clear robbery. Ultimately cab drivers count for nearly nothing. Nearly; which is to say more than nothing. While Spence had a major injury scrap his scheduled fight, one might reason that he had the worst year because of it. No fight AND a major injury in the later months of the year. Not good.
So for you it'd be a six-way tie between Goulamirian, Makabu, Golovkin, Spence, LSC and GRJ? (the guys that basically took it off)
Sounds right. Might be a bit IBF-rules-like but I feel its a respectable opinion. Realistically, case by case basis could prove otherwise.
I hope Breidis fights Okolie next year. Something tells me 2022 will be another horrid year for cruiserweights, cause I feel like Okolie and Hearn will put their running boots on and face some unknown bum instead. They'll wait another year or two until Breidis is like 100 years old and then call it a 'mega fight' for 2023. For me, most disappointing is Jermall Charlo. This guy talks talks and talks constantly, but when it comes down to making the big fights, he's ducking like a coward. Andrade and GGG are very tough fights, but no excuses. PBC are also not helping. Also my spidey senses are tingling for Canelo-Makabu. I'm predicting an upset. I think the size might be too much for little gingerbread. 2022 won't be any better than 2021. There won't be Crawford-Spence, no Fury-Usyk either, no Andrade/Golovkin-Charlo matchups and certainly no big fights for Tank as Floyd continues his ducking operations. The real most disappointing of 2021 is PBC. So many big fights to be made, so little that actually were. And too much politics and ducking. And that's not just PBC either. Top Rank, Matchroom are guilty too to a lesser extent.
