Whats odd about Eddy's rating here of middles is that he also said that Charley Burley was the greatest fighter he ever trained and that included Joe Louis and Frazier.
I believe he's rating Burley as a Welterweight not a middleweight in that comment. He called him the finest/greatest all round fighter he ever saw. I have seen a quote where he called him the "best" too. But yeh gotta be basing that on 147 i reckon.
Early in the Monzon vs Licata title fight in Madison Square Garden on June 30 1975, Licata tried to use foot movement but Carlos began to cut off the ring, forcing Tony to exchange which was not a good idea as Licata was stopped, TKO 10.
Eddie Futch shortly before his passing said he enjoyed watching Floyd Mayweather. He said Floyd does certain things defensivley that he hadn't seen since the boxers of the late 1930- 40s. Something to consider for those convinced boxing skills have advanced.
I respect Futch's opinion but I wonder how much is nostalgia from his time coming of age watching Ray Robinson. I've always thought Ray was vulnerable at 160 to the very best middleweights of all time far,far more than he was at lower weights as almost all of his losses occurred there. He's certainly top 3 and in my mind the greatest pound for pound fighter in history. Cerdan is a strange choice though, I've thought he was somewhat underrated and believe he'd have beaten LaMotta in a rematch but that ranking is high.
