The funny thing about Purrity is he had a stretch where he beat Wlad, Jorge Luis Gonzalez, Hipp, and drew w Morrison while dropping decisions to Rahman, Grant, Donald, Sanders, and Byrd for his only loses. (He also beat a bunch of nobodies at that time without losing to any.) 3-5-1 against pretty high level opposition w the big win isn’t so bad. A lot of recognized contenders and some belt holders have come out worse.
Yeah, I tend to think of a journeyman as as a Ross Purtity - Wimpy Halstead - Cookie Wallace type. Seems like many of the guys named were a level up: one time prospect/contenders who turned into gatekeepers. So maybe gatekeepers > journeymen > opponents (guys with very few fights brought in to pad records). There might even be one more level toward the bottom. And, yep, gatekeepers do a lot of traveling or journeying. As for the fighters named in the poll, I go with former #1 contender Doug Jones.
I think a guy like Bob Satterfield takes the title for this. Beat so many great guys despite losing to so many guys. But I have a hard time calling him a journeyman. I more think of B Cooper when I think tough journeymen
