Roy vs Vinny Paz was a complete mismatch. The fight should never have been made. However, consider this: A former lightweight with fantastic hand speed, could hardly land a clean shot on Roy. Roy even went a full round without being hit. That gives you an idea of just how hard it would have been for a guy like Artur to have landed clean, hurtful shots.
The problem with this matchup is that Beterbiev has the strength of a heavyweight and amazing stamina, he will be strong as an ox from round 1 to 12. Unless Roy punches hard enough to stop Artur, eventually Artur will trap Roy and KO him with body shots or headshots. I don't see Roy tattooing Beterbiev for 12 rounds without taking a few hard hits, and it only takes one. Let's also not forget the pressure Beterbiev puts his opponents under, and his clinch game/inside fighting is ATG.
It would have been an extremely dangerous fight for Roy. But I don’t think that it would have been a given that he’d eventually have caught up with him.
Do you think Roy could go 12 rounds with Beterbiev without getting in at least one clinch? Even if Beterbiev does not do any significant damage when they get into a clinch, the mental damage Roy will experience when he gets rag dolled will instill the same acceptance of defeat that gvozdyk experienced when Artur manhandled him. Artur is not coming to box Roy, he is coming to destroy at a frenetic pace, he will force Roy into a fire fight/shoot out, and Roy will be forced to fight Beterbiev's fight. You can only beat Beterbiev if you don't allow him to impose his will on you.
Roy's tendency to move back to the ropes in a straight line was a defensive flaw of his that was evident throughout his career, AB has the perfect style to cause Roy problems and I suspect that Roy would have avoided him, just like he avoided Michalczewski. Vinny has faster hands but he is nowhere near as strong on the inside, he couldn't bully Roy like AB can. AB would be walking forward, applying the pressure on Roy all night, AB's body punches are extremely powerful and wear down the stamina of opponents, 17 fights 17 KO's Roy never faced anyone as dangerous as AB at LHW.
The only reason why he would lose to either of those is due to age, prime AB knocks out both of them, just as he sent Gvozdyk, one of the most skilled technicians in the sport, into retirement.
Beterbiev loses every round except the one where he breaks Roy’s ribs and they carry him off on a stretcher. Everyone who picked Roy suddenly will change their tune and say, but Roy was a MW doe. This site is hilarious. Anyone could beat Beterbiev (except the guys he actually faced in the ring) according to most people on this site. Meanwhile he’s undefeated and unlike many of the “darlings” of the site he hasn’t needed a gift decision even once. Not bad for an untalented guy.
