Frank Bruno Vs Earnie Shavers - Can We Say Frank Has A Great Chance Of winning?

I honestly think Frank Bruno had a better jab than Shavers did. And while Earnie is often credited as being one of the hardest right handed hitters of all time, Frank in my mind rated up there with the best of them. You generally had to be a great fighter to beat Bruno. Bonecrusher smith was the only man who was LESS than great to beat Frank and let’s face it. Even HE wasn’t all that bad. And Bruno was beating him handily before getting stopped. I’m not necessarily saying that Frank should be favored but I can see certain aspects where he was indeed the better fighter and would have an excellent chance of winning this.

As for how the fight would play out, I believe it would be a pure puncher’s affair and probably ending in less than five rounds one way or the other.

Shavers was well within the reach of Bruno to beat. In fact I might even lean towards him winning.

 

Frank could win,,but his head is straight up and tailor made for Ernie's overhand right. Close to a toss up but I lean towards Shavers

 

I’d pick Frank to KO shavers.

 

Whilst he was always matched to win, Never beat a live fighter, Frank was a good boxer. He was better technically than Ernie.

I think Frank can hit Ernie more times before he takes one back.

I think Bruno beats Shavers like he beat McCall. Outboxing him all night and hanging on for fear life at the final bell.

Technically Shavers was no better than McCall. I Like Shavers, though. There never was any quit in him. Always came to win. You can’t knock a guy like that. But punch power alone isn’t always going to trump the guy with more tools.

Frank could box long. He had what it takes here.

 

Did you ever get hit by Tyson, Lewis, or Shavers? You don't know which one hits harder. What we do know is that Shavers had a glass chin and wasn't really that good. He lost to tons of lower level fighters.

Bruno only lost to top level guys and it took tons of punches to send him down. Bruno should beat Shavers and he should beat him pretty easily.

 

Bruno didn't prove to be frail against top fighters. It isn't like these guys knocked him out with one punch. He got hit with tons of punches by really big punchers before he was stopped. Shavers on the other hand lost to tons of lower level guys. Frank was levels above Shavers.

 

Frank has a shot. Earnie was one-dimentional and had a less than stellar chin himself. But if I were a betting man, my choice would still be Earnie

 

Silly question of coarse i have never been hit by any of these guys but we all make opinions after studying fighters.And it seems pretty clear to me Shavers is regarded as one of the most lethal punchers ever but in no way am i disrespecting the power of Tyson or Lewis

 

Good matchup. I think it's a 50/50 fight.

 

I said "fragile against the best of the division and the odd guy that hung in there with them." Bruno never once won in 4 goes against the top guys. He ended up stopped conclusively in all of these bouts. He was "fragile" against them as he simply couldn't beat them and ended up without his senses on every try. Fragile need not be 1 and 2 round KO losses or losing from one punch. He was also beaten late by Bonecrusher Smith but to be fair to Frank it only happened once in his career and Crusher was a reasonable heavyweight with big power.

Frank as not "levels above Shavers". Bruno was more consistent and less likely to get bowled over out of the blue but Shavers had the better top end wins. There's been decent arguments for both guys and i think that sums up the matchup personally.

 

Only if Frank Bruno can catch Earnie Shavers like Jerry Quarry did in round one on Dec 14 1973.

 

Good fight and very interesting. Both guys were powerful but had major flaws. I don't think either of them would want a long fight as they both had a tendency to gas.
Bruno had very few competitive fights in his career. In the few that he did have, he adopted a very safety first approach whereas Shavers was never shy to let his shots go.
When I look back at Frank's challenge against Tim Witherspoon, he was alarmingly open to the looping overhand right. Shavers' right hand was straighter, quicker and utterly thunderous.
Having said this, Earnie was wide open to a counter when throwing his big right, the most dramatic instance of this was against Jerry Quarry.
This one may well come down to who lands first and my hunch is for Shavers but this is certainly not a contest I would bet on.
