Randall Tex Cobb. quoting what Earnie Shavers told me in Dallas Texas." That man must have had concrete poured into his chin I hit him harder than I'd knocked other guy our with & he laughed & said That all you got Earnie"?
Why would anybody think that it's for entertainment? It's for glory, reputation and therefore money, status and career mobility.
Some of the comments in this thread I think are missing the point. Boxers don't have a "warrior" or "willing to die" mindset for the purpose of entertaining the fans, or being respected for not quitting. They have the mindset because they are trying to WIN the damn fight! They simply won't give up trying to win. That's all.
Every time any boxer steps in the ring he is risking his health and his life anyway. He could get pinned on the ropes in the opening seconds and battered to death with a few clean unanswered blows. It happens. Or he could go the full ten and win a routine decision in a routine fight and then collapse in his dressing room and die from some shots he took. It happens. You can't always quit yourself out of harm. I mean, if you really want to be safe, stay the **** out of the boxing ring in the first place. That's the right advice.
If your willing to die in the ring for the sake of a boxing match then you are an idiot quite frankly. For what? I don’t blame boxers for ‘quitting’ to save themselves from serious and life threatening injuries. I don’t think any boxer is genuinely willing to die in the ring. Your always taking a risk of course and tragedies occur as we know but there’s no way any boxer goes into a fight thinking I am willing to die in here.
Go back and watch it, wilder quit. Sure he was knocked down hard but he lay on the canvas like a dog in the sun until he knew it was over then tried to get up
It's like being an infantry soldier. Yeah, you could definitely say it's idiotic. There's a fine line between brave and stupid, and it's a blurred line. The idea is to win. The problem is, you have to take risks to win, and you can't give up or run away when you approach dangerous territory. You have to go into the danger zone. There's no way round it. Nobody wants to die, barring a few exceptional nutters. But you have to be willing to risk your life.
A lot of boxers come from poverty and don’t have a lot of options. Why ruin their bodies if that’s their only way of making money
So many great mentions. Cheers lads. The 2 that immediately come to mind for me are La Vida Loca and Bobby Chacon.
