Do some people think Floyd Mayweather made boxing more popular than its ever been

Floyd is very famous and PPV helped him immensely. He doesn't have the status of Ali and Tyson because he's not a likeable or accessible person and never stood for anything.

 

Mostly true, but you made up the part about Pacquiao. Mayweather—McGregor and various Canelo fights have done huge numbers since.

 

Canelo vs Mayweather was before the Pac fight.

McGregor was a circus act and drew in fans from the UFC, that doesn't really count.

Canelo is the only guy remotely coming close to Mayweather numbers. Guys like Spence, Usyk, etc should be house hold names by now given their resumes.

 

Nowhere in my post was I suggesting Mayweather is as famous as Ali.

 

Idk why you're talking about Canelo--Mayweather. I wasn't.

The difference now is that Canelo, Joshua, Davis, and all these guys are getting paid very well, when boxers at similar levels were getting jerked in the past.

Mayweather changed the business and it's reflected in other fighters' networth. Maywether beating Pacquiao is neither here nor there.

HELL NO!! That little diva has almost single handed brought boxing down to the level of the WWE No one believes its a combat sport any more. Along with his backers the state commissions , vegas boxing and their officials etc THE SPORT I LOVE IS NO MORE

 

Put up pics of Ali , Tyson & Mayweather in street clothes & ask casuals who they are EVERYONE would know Ali & Tyson but not half of them would recognize Mayweather At least not until he started impersonating wolf man lol

 

How do you measure that?

 

I think if anything boxing was less popular in his popularity peak then when he debuted. Although it has been consistently going down however having the most popular fighter cherry pick and when he finally fought Pac it was years too late and the fight disappointed.

 

Nothing Floyd could have done would have made him as popular as Tyson or Ali regardless of the ppv model. He didn't have the charisma or fight style to ever get to their level.

 

Most people didn't even know who the heavyweight champion was.
