Probably not. Louis generally took that type of fighter apart rather effortlessly

Yeah, Louis preyed on those types of fighters like a tiger preys on cattle.

They might well be equal in power, but Baer was far more successful at stopping ranked contenders.

Power on its own, won't get you very far!

Au contraire my friend. Need I remind you of guys like Deontay Wilder, Gerry Cooney or Mike Weaver?

I think that we have to be more critical of Williams here.

He got his chances, against the best, and by and large failed to capitalize on them.

Baer at least, breezed through the elite of his era, to get to the title.

After he lost the title, he went on another winning streak, against contenders.

Baer was a class above Williams.

If Bauer was an idiot, it only shows what a waste of potential he was!

Then I would remind you of guys like Mac Foster.

Wild fight. Both wing and a prayer merchants really. Max had bucket loads of talent but was dreadfully ill disciplined, in the ring and out. Big Cat knew what he was doing. Be patient and set up the right.
Williams is going to win this simply because he will hold his game together longer.

Yeah but neither was a defensive whiz. So Max is going to land something as well.

Absolutely Ali. Max will make mistakes launching though. Countered and flattened.

I think Williams was a much better boxer than Baer who frankly looks woeful on film. Baer's big ace in the hole is his tremendous chin and power, whereas Williams had a questionable chin. The point to consider is whether Williams blasts Baer out of there before Baer clips him a hard one. I'm honestly not sure. On paper and on the eye test I'd take Williams but my gut check says Baer because Baer managed to mow down an awful lot of guys despite his technical shortcomings.

Yeah, Baer is one of those, "And yet, he kept winning..." guys.

EDIT: Sometimes I wonder whether his bizarre style was so crude and unorthodox that it was hard to deal with for competent fighters accustomed to facing competent opponents. One of those you-wouldn't-understand-unless-you-shared-a-ring-with-him situations like people are always saying Marciano's opponents dealt with.

Based on how people view Baer, he should have lost every single fight in his career. Yet somehow, he managed to beat the best fighters in the world.

Williams is no match for Baer and his style wouldn't work against him.

Yeah, I forgot when Williams managed to terrorize HW division in Louis manner. I also didn't know that Baer with injured right hand is the best version of Baer we can find.
