Who'd win this matchup, and who was the more overrated fighter ? Both of them are quite overrated in my eyes, with Dempsey being far more overrated. I'm going with Liston KO6. Thoughts ?
I'd have to go with Liston on this one. Though Dempsey is a live underdog. However, Liston has the physical advantage and the technical skill. And the better resume.
Be similar to the Liston Cleveland Williams fight, violent exchanges by both men that would leave Dempsey crumpled on the canvas in 3 rounds.
I'd favor Liston but Dempsey's hand-speed, and experience fighting bigger men gives him a reasonable chance of an upset here.
It's much harder for Liston to hit Dempsey than it would be for Dempsey to hit Liston. Liston was pretty slow but a very technically proficient fighter who could hit like hell. I'd take peak Dempsey over 1964 Liston probably an early stoppage. Neither is particularly overrated. Everybody has their own ratings.
Didnt ali deck this pretendor with one punch and leotis martin knock him flat for 5 minutes. Liston was usually a good pretty tough heavyweight but tough guys never did so well against dempsey and willard and miske were tougher than liston everr was
Was going to go into a long break down, dissecting everything you wrote to prove you're a ****ing idiot but this one word does the job better than anything I could do.
It's funny, since I was thinking about doing the exact same thing and then didn't bother to do it for just about the same reason as you.
IMHO: No fight length was given so I'll take it as a 12 rounder, with both men reconstituted to their respective primes. Assuming that Dempsey gets to see all Liston films he wants to see, and gets to train with sparring partners who can at least somewhat mimic Liston, I'd go with Dempsey in this match up. Dempsey's not Floyd Patterson, but, of course, he's not Muhammad Ali either. He loved fighting big, slow guys, but, to be fair, Liston's not Jess Willard or Fred Fulton either. He could trouble Dempsey at times, seriously perhaps, and it could sure turn into one wild fight, with some knockdowns. I'll go with Dempsey, by stoppage, around the 9th round.
Watch the Patterson fights if you want to see what a 190 pressure fighter with fast combinations does against Liston. Dempsey gets annihilated
