Ok folks, so I have Ruben Olivares coming to town on Thursday and he’ll be here in LA for over a week. I have a few events lined up for him for those in LA that can attend and want to meet him. Details below. I’ll be picking some of the best questions to ask him and will post the replies too so fire away! (Sorry if I don’t get them all done). This content is protected
Phenomenal, Chris! My question to Ruben is this: At your peak as a bantamweight, when you were fully focused and had trained your hardest, is there any other bantamweight who you think was capable of beating you? For example, how do you think a fight between you and Eder Jofre would have gone?
Great stuff Chris. Can you ask him did he expect to beat a top contender like Alan Rudkin who’d gave Harada and Rose fits inside 2 rounds.
Chris, can you ask him what he thought of a fight between himself, and both Carlos Zarate and Wilfredo Gomez? Furthermore, if I may ask a few questions, could you ask about his offesive training; IE: was it all intuitive, or was it taught by one coach or even by a team of coaches. Was he taught how to throw that shot as a kid/before he turned pro or was it something he fine tuned later on? And finally, if it's not too much to ask, could you ask for his opinion about the bantamweights who came before him? How does he think he'd match up with Panama Al Brown, or Manuel Ortiz? Died he know much about the 1910s Golden Era? How does he rate them, and how does he feel he'd have done against them?
Alan, I’m gonna put you on FaceTime with him. Probably Saturday or Sunday. What’s a good time for you?
Honestly, just seeing his name takes me back to the early 70s , countless times he was on the cover of the Ring and Boxing News, with in depth coverage of his very exciting battles, if I close my eyes can still see him on the cover of BI standing over Castillio with caption " Olivares Numuro uno " the gap toothed grin, the broad shoulders, the hair starting to grow long, he along with Napoles were all I lived for ( boxing wise ) during my formative years, where has the time gone.... keep safe guys.
Yes, this: Was he surprised to see JLR become a world champ and major factor in the years after they fought? Same with Bobby Chacon — what were his original impressions of Bobby and what did he see in Chacon at the time they first fought? Also, what does Danny remember about his fight with Sean O’Grady (wasn’t Sean like 17 at the time?) and ask Michael Nunn what sized horseshoe he had in his glove when he hit Kalumbay (g).
That's a good one for Danny Lopez. I've always wondered about that fight. I'm sure I read somewhere that O'Grady has a copy of the fight.
I met Sean at a Tuesday Night Fights card sometime back in the day. Cool guy. He told me he thought he had it ‘somewhere’ at home. The main thing I remember about our encounter was I had just been to see The Rolling Stones and was wearing a Stones sweatshirt. Got there way early before the show started and approached Sean and the first thing he said was ‘I like that sweatshirt’ and how he was a big Stones fan and wanted to hear all about the concert. That’s mostly what we talked about, haha. Great guy.
He come over as a classy guy when he was in Scotland for the Jim Watt fight. I thought he was great in the Hilmer Kenty fight, those body shots.....
I think 1 pm is the earliest we could go. He’s staying at Gene’s place. Are you on Spanish time currently? If so, nine hours difference.
