Bigger disappointment: Gary Russell Jr or Guillermo Rigondeaux?

Gary Russell never show us the elite ability Rigo did vs a prime Donaire. So he can’t be a disappointment if he perform to the best of his ability. Rigo on the other hand showed what level he could have been on vs Donaire and never showed that eliteness again.. We knew what his ceiling could be and he never got there so he’s the by far bigger disappointment.

 

The pedigree of Rigo vs the flashy speed of GRJr? I was psyched about both of these guys when I first saw them. Since that time both have pretty much sucked. They have in common an utter schooling from Lomachenko.

Meh...both are huge disappointments. Let them fade away sucking together with nothing to choose between them.

 

Obviously Gary Russell Jr.

He had the ability and the chance to unify the entire featherweight division, and he chose to fight once a year. It's like boxing has been part time profession for him. All the talents and prime years wasted in inactivity.

 

GRJ, because he never lived up to his potential. Rigo was at least a legit champion and had some good fights. Still prime for prime, I’d much rather watch GRJ fight than Rigo. Rigo was painful to watch at times. Both could have been much bigger stars then they wound up being.

 

Lets talk at their peaks. Their absolute peak. In terms of best performance. Rigo beats GR.

That performance vs donaire was practically perfect. An absolute work of art and a boxing clinic.

 

Russell Jr hands down. Rigo is no disappointment he had a great career borderline HOF.

 

They might as well fight each other now.

 

You can’t compare a guy with one the best wins of the last twenty years, multiple titles and multiple Olympic golds to a guy who by design was fighting once per year.

I back Rigo for hof taking into account his am record.

 

I'd say Rigondeaux. He was absolutely mismanaged by Bob Arum. Arum was busy feeding Donaire showcase type face first, small opponents like Sydorenko, Arce, Montiel etc, but seemed to match Rigondeaux with awkward bigger opponents. Rigondeaux was a two handed fighter when he was coming up. He should have been given a similar diet of Arce, Montiel types. After the Cordoba debacle Arum again tried to match Rigondeaux in another stink fest against a 5'9 outside boxing giant in Jonathan Romero. That isn't how you match a small 5'3 122 pounder if you want him to look good.

Russell jr. On the other hand seemed to prefer to fight sparingly.

Both guys were ducked by testicless fassys such as the Cowardly Lion of Belfast, and Leo Panty Cruz.

 

Donaire would most likely have KO'd all of Rigo's opponents. Styles makes fights. Rigo is a safety first fighter and Donaire is a destroy 'em type fighter.

 

Not even close. Only names on his resume are Nonito and Loma and he was schooled, embarrassed, and washed in that fight.

A single win doesn't get you into the HOF.

 

Rigo made his bad w/ some stinkers, but otherwise had a solid career. Moreso as an AM, but did well enough as a pro. GRjr wasted too much time fighting once a year.

 

Exactly. People forget that Rigo had the fearsome punching Nonito moonwalking for the entirety of the final round.
