Here is a man who appeared to be angered by the lack of adulation afforded him. He felt he was equal in talent to the preceding champion(s) yet it was because of the void left by the huge charismatic personality of this preceding champion that anyone following his departure at the time was likely to be ignored. This was most obvious amongst the media who now had a more conservative, blue collar champion versus the audacious rhymes and quick witted repartee that they had come to love from the former champ. The media figuratively cordoned off Holmes as if to say.....move along folks, nothing to see here. While I can understand the resentment for doing the same job just as successfully and not getting a pat on the back would indeed cause the frustration, if one looks further into the life of this man one has to be impressed with the strength of his character, commitment to family and judicious use of his finances for a man in his position and all that is available for the taking.


Earned his way to the title by fighting for chump change while working fulltime jobs because he had no Olympic pedigree to his name. Held the title for seven and a half years (second longest reign in heavyweight history only to the great Joe Louis). Came out of retirement and still fought successfully until the age of 52. Has been married to the same woman for over thirty years, was never arrested or accused of partaking in drugs (including steroids), drinking, abuse of women, etc.. Retired well off financially having invested his earnings instead of owing money or being broke. Quite an accomplishment and lots to be proud of.
