I'm not sure there was ever any period where boxing was, overall, more popular than baseball. Part of it was the issue of middle-class respectability: whether a major league game in a big city, or a minor league game in a small town, the whole family could go out to a baseball game. With boxing, the rich and the middle class would only be seen at the big name, big money fights. Those people weren't going to a smoky, mob-run gym or club to watch the local tough guys slug it out in the low and middle levels of the sport.

So, for much of its history, boxing was dominated by a few big names at any given time--at times, just one, the HW champion--and the rest of the sport was known only to the hardcores.

I suspect baseball was still holding the position #1 most popular sport, with boxing #2, in America, at boxing's peak.
