BEST I FACED: MARVELOUS MARVIN HAGLER

Always surprises me how these fighters who were big time champs, with all the money and glory they gained can still be pretty petty.

 

Would've been nice to see Marvin get over the Leonard fight and realize his career wasn't defined by that one day. Sadly, he never seemed to.

 

He’s obviously biased against SRL but his estimate of Duran is very interesting.

 

He didn’t come to fight, he came to last.
He didn’t [just] move, he ran.

I'm just guessing here but it seems as though he didn't like Mr. Leonard very much.

 

Good. He ignored cherrypicker Leonard. Leonard lost to Hearns and Hagler in my opinion. Hagler fight was close but Hearns won the fight wider.

Still good fighter. No shame at Duran, Hearns, Hagler, Norris, Camacho losses.

 

Lol. Minter had the best chin? That fight was pure butchery. Minter was been staggered with ever shot that Hagler landed. Jab, cross, hook, you name it. Every shot no matter how hard or soft seem to hurt Minter.Crazy to say he had the best chin.

 

He couldn’t say Leonard because he couldn’t hit Leonard and he can’t admit he couldn’t catch him.

 

I thought he should have said Antuofermo for best chin. 15 rounds he couldn't put a dent in him and the rematch was stopped on cuts - although he did deck him once in that fight. Not too shabby for a total of 20 rounds.

 

There were a couple of quantum evolutions in the sport of boxing that preceded Leonard-Hagler:

1) At some point in the 20th century, or maybe it was the 19th, they started constructing these things called rings — a raised square platform bordered by ropes, which keep the combatants, and the fight, inside a designated space.

2) Someone, somewhere, invented the concept of cutting off the ring, by which Fighter A is allowed to employ certain legal tactics to close the space on Fighter B, use those corners and ropes to his advantage and force him go to where Fighter A wants rather than move as Fighter B wants.

All of this, apparently, was lost on Marvin, who apparently thought Leonard was obliged to face him in a game of rock-em-sock-em robots and stand there taking turns hitting each other at a standstill.

We call this sport boxing. Leonard employed his tactics to dictate the terms of combat and MMH followed him around not unlike a puppy dog — and make no mistake, Marvin was a good puppy as he chose to not fight southpaw the first four rounds and just trot around two steps behind.

And when Hagler did close he distance, Leonard unleashed punches and won many of those exchanges.

With what he was being paid, Marvin could have afforded some new shoe leather, haha.
