I know and agree with what you're saying, but I can't see that happening. Queensberry have someone similar in Nathan Heaney. From memory, he was on the card in Telford when Dubois faced Dinu, and Heaney was on one of the earlier undercard slots. By the time the main event happened, the arena was mostly empty - Heaney's fans were already back off to Stoke on pre-arranged coaches. End result was a main event with a shitty atmosphere and awful TV optics. I can't imagine the arena were too happy with the loss of bar sales etc in the run up to the main event either. Ticket sellers like that will inevitably end up towards the top of bills for that reason.
He seems a nice bloke and I hope he does well. But last night he looked very basic, a complete novice tbh. If he gets anywhere near British title level he's done well. Bosh.
Felt he looked really bad last night, white-collar level. Couldn't land a jab, swinging for the fences, and the poor mans Hughie Fury impression shuffling the arms around was dreadful (never EVER thought I would accuse someone of being a poor mans Hughie Fury)
He’s garbage but the Matchroom stable is full of gimmicks, false narratives and ‘stories’ now. Harper used to work in a chippy. Courtenay used to be a fat alcy and has turned her life around. Fisher sells 3 million tickets and his dads hilarious and loves Chinese hahaha bosh. Conor Benn. Ebanie Bridges. Campbell Hatton. Babic.
Boxing promotion is about selling a story that is why Jake Paul earns a fortune and fair play to him. Eddie has nailed the promotion of Johnny Fisher he is very raw and young, but the beauty of big heavyweights is they can always be put into entertaining fights. Similar to Dave Allen he can tell a fun story with him, but we shouldn't expect to much just accept it for what it is.
I was pretty impressed with his upper body movement. Granted it was against Enguema but he's got potential.
Point taken and that's a really good point. I just think Matchroom should ignore the audience and focus on Johnny Fisher's boxing qualities or lack thereof. He's young, so they have plenty of time, but of course it's hard when he's selling so many tickets right now after only a few fights. If they build him up properly, I can see 10,000 - 12,000 spectators in 3 - 4 years time. Matchroom Boxing need UK Stars and maybe they´ve got a future star in Fisher ?
From what I saw last night he can't really box. Was swinging wildly on a D class journeyman to little effect.
To be fair they should go the whole way with it. I want to see Callum Smith basically rip off Randy Savage.
He didnt look great last night and maychroom can be enfuriating with their constant pushing the narrative but lets not drop in to the he had one bad fight so he is dreadful mentality. Fury "lost" to Mcdermott remember, not that im saying he can get anywhere to Furys level but still one bad performance doesnt make him a lost cause and he did clearly won the fight at least.
I agree with a lot of what has been posted but still, I think a bit of context is needed. Someone mentioned on the last page that he looks like a novice...that's because he is a total novice! He started to box at Exeter university for a bit of fun and to keep fit. He has zero amateur background. He had a handful of white collar type fights then went around the gyms sparing and found he could hold his own with decent heavyweights so decided to give it ago and turn pro. I don't think Matchroom see him as a future champion or someone who's going to dominate a division, noting of the sort he could become a good domestic fighter, make good money and sells tickers so he has a place in boxing domestically if he wants one. I don't think he's a gimmick in the way Babic or to a lesser extent Allen are though- I think he wants to learn his craft see how far he can go in the sport nothing wrong with that. The bosh army stuff is cringeworthy I agree but in the end it's quite harmless really.
In terms of experience he is a novice and by the fact that he can generate ticket sales in the 1000’s , allegedly, that is a double edged sword . His Eddiness made a comment to the effect that he was concerned that Fisher’s fans didn’t want to see him against a tomato can so they probably matched him too hard , and I agree that there are a lot easier opponents out there . Personally I think most of his fans would be more than happy to see Fisher punch holes in his opponent. However because of the hype around ticket sales there are a lot more eyes on Fisher and where ideally he should be brought along way down the bill he now is a joint support ? Matchroom did the same with Campbell soup you would have thought they would have wised up and realise that narrative is all very well but at the end of the day development of boxer needs a bit more savvy. I do think Fisher has potential but he needs a few years of the right sort of experience.
