Ali: Liston Williams Folley Patterson Moore Chuvalo Terrel MildenBerg Cooper Tyson: Spinks Holmes Tucker Smith Ruddock Williams Biggs Tubbs Bruno Thomas Berbick Stewart
1. Ali never went to Prison 2. Ali had 3 ATG wins. 2x vs Liston and 1 vs Patterson. Tyson only has Holmes on his resume and has a loss Advantage: Ali
Tyson. Muh resume types have to take into account H2H abilities. 80s contenders were more dangerous than guys like Patterson.
Spinks is a great win, Holmes was past his best, though. Liston was a great win, Patterson wasn't old at all, Williams was past it but based on leading up to it, still very good. Ali has three extremely good names, while Tyson only has one but quite a few other good contenders. It could go either way but I'm going to tilt towards Ali slightly. Terrel became champ after he was exiled, Chuvalo was ranked at the time, Folley was ranked at the time. Mildenberger was ranked and the European champion.
I agree that boxing has evolved overall, but I doubt the evolution was that big in only twenty years. Even today there are records in objective sports which have stood for over 20 years by far. Tyson at 5'10 was smaller than anybody who became champion in either the 1960s or 1970s, so it's not even like he would have a size advantage over 60s or 70s fighters.
Ali pre exile you mean Sonny Liston x2 were the best wins, though spinks get swept aside was scary I actually think Tyson has the greater resume at this stage of their careers, if we don't count Douglas. However, as Tyson looked to be slightly on the slide before Prison, Ali was only getting better and better until his forced exile Tyson had the better wins at this stage (or at least on par) but Ali looked the better fighter and of course Ali's resume only grew much stronger in the golden era of the 70s To conclude, I think Tysons early reign gets a little underrated. It lacked atg boxers bar old Holmes and light Heavy Spinks. However, Larry fought on much longer and was competitive with Holyfield among others. Nobody stopped him like Mike and Tyson retired Spinks
They got dramatically larger. Look at Tucker, Douglas or Bruno. Patterson was a pumped-up LHW. Tyson was a fit 220 lbs, easily as big as Liston who was deemed a monster for his age.
Liston on average during their title reigns both outweighed and was taller than Tyson. Tyson did have a freakishly large build though, no argument against that.
Ruddock was big name at that time so was Holmes and Spinks Thomas too Biggs was supposed to give tyson problems top 1 contender all these guys when tyson beat them were top 5 contenders or champions ruddock would beat patterson and Williams easy
