I don't think it will be around in 10 years. Actually there is a theory circulating the internets that all combat sports are going to become illegal because of CTE evidence of retired fighters from boxing/mma/kickbox .
In my country everything regarding boxing is a taboo. The "political correctness" here does not allow to show 2 guys fighting, neither to inform about them in any way. Obviously, boxers are not very popular here, even our own world chamions (not many) are completely unknown. People know what mass medias tell them to know. Nothing less, nothing more. EIDT: our political correctness didnt avoid in any way my country to participate in the bombing of yugoslavia or to provide weapons to the weakest side of the ukraine vs russia war so that it last as long as possible and to cause the maximum number of casualties there. Just in case you were wondering that. Boxing, ofc, is worse than bombing people or giving weapons to people so that they kill each other. My country is a ****ing shithole.
A big reason is because of ppv. According to classic, everyone was watching boxing when the big fights were free. Lomachenko has been fighting on regular tv and his viewing numbers are only getting higher. Inoue and Tank also have solid numbers when they fight for free. Martin vs Ortiz, Thurman vs Barrios, and all the Tank pay per views have just been a slap in the face for fans.
There is no one answer, when i grew up most of my peers at least tried their hand at boxing even if it a few training sessions, that sure does not happen with todays youth. Boxing here in UK was on terrestrial TV, everyone watched it and most could at least name who held the domestic British heavyweight title, huge majority sure could not do that now. The outrageous scoring fiascos do not aid the publics view of our sport. I blame all these pillows they wear on their mitts, abandoning the good old London Prize Ring rules, to go over to these fancy dan poofy Queensberry rules, it has taken the entertainment out of the sport which does not come up to "scratch"
Channel 5 are still televising Boxing. Sam Eggington topped the last two cards so you can imagine the value the viewers got.....And they did.
Hiding sports behind a pay wall is never good for the grass roots. In the UK, it has been catastrophic. It is now almost impossible to sell tickets for local amateur or pro shows. Sell a few and they will come next time because usually, people are staggered at the quality and honesty on show. It's bloody hard. The situation in the States would appear different. Our American cousins don't exactly embrace world wide sport do they ? No longer dominant in Boxing, They watch Basketball I guess.
