Mike Tyson KO'd a 38 yo Larry Holmes in 4 rounds, Evander went the distance with a 42 yo Holmes

Evander was never known for explosive KOs and Mike Tyson wasn't known for in and out boxing rhythm.

Styles makes fights and also Larry Holmes hadn't fought in 3 years, when he fought Mike Tyson. And was also coming off 2 losses to Michael Spinks.

Holmes also in his 2nd career developed more of a rope a dope tactic, which he used vs Holyfield, Mercer. Which helped the older man not having to chase the younger fitter fighters around the ring, and helped conserve energy and also helped support them 42 year old legs.

 

That pretty much sums it up. I will also add that when Larry fought Evander he wasn’t coming cold out of retirement. He had several comeback fights including a win over a contender and over a year to get in somewhat shape

 

Eh. The lay off that Holmes took between the second Spinks fight and the Tyson fight was about as long as the lay off Wilder and Fury took between their second and third fight.

People act Like he was out of the ring for ages which is BS. Maybe he was a bit rusty but he was also in Great shape at 225...he never Got so fit again after that fight.

People should give Mikey more credit for easily blowing out a still very formidable version of Holmes.

 

I remember making a similar case that this Holmes (specifically the one against Mercer) was actually better than the one who fought Tyson, as he was less rusty, but more importantly was more accepting of his limitations at that stage of his career in life, as opposed to fighting like it was still 1979, and therefore able to make adjustments. I was laughed out of the forum.

However, Tyson was still a devastating puncher, and would've more than likely dispatched even this version of Holmes far easier than Holyfield.

 

I doubt you´ll get any better at that age in boxing. He was 10lb+ heavier in any fight afterwards also, which is a big nono for a moving jabber.

Regarding both Holyfields and Tysons performance, maybe there´s some proof in Larry Holmes appearance right before the fight?
When Larry Holmes entered the ring against Holyfield, he was laughing.
When he entered against Tyson:

"But Richie Giachetti, who had been in the corner with Holmes the night Tyson stopped him, said Spinks had the same look on his face that Larry just before the bell, alook he had never seen on Larry's face in any of his fights. It was the look of fear."

Maybe the better word here is "tensed".

 

I've said many times this is how Tyson rolls. Against good to very good fighters he will virtually always get them out of there quicker than guys like Holmes, Ali, Holyfield and plenty of others. Tyson had ATG power and knew how to apply it early and indeed fed on it. He may be the greatest ever at getting rid of sub great heavyweights and guys moving up in weight. It's how he was.

 

Well the fact is Holmes was also on a losing streak, and his previous 3 fights two vs Spinks and the one vs Williams. He was pretty poor in all 3 of these fights.

Let's put it this way if Tyson was 38 years old, coming off 3 poor performances after 3 year lay off. Would Tyson fans give Holmes the same credit for beating Tyson ?

Just because Holmes beat Mercer, and went distance with Holyfield. After Tyson KOed him doesn't strengthen that argument either for me.

Just because Holmes had been fighting keeping busy like I said. And he also adapted a different style in his 2nd career, aka rope a dope. Which he used vs Mercer and Holyfield to survive and conserve energy.

If Holmes would of fought in middle of ring vs those guys, he may of been stopped also. As Mercer in 1st round almost stopped Holmes with a jab. But the fight was fought primarily on the ropes, which Mercer stupidly fought and played into older mans hands.

Lastly does Tyson deserve some credit for being first man to stop Holmes ? Yes of course but there was also other factors which I pointed out above.

 

Guess what happened when they both faced Douglas in their physical primes.

 

The only thing that Holyfield lacked was raw punching power and all the muscle mass he gained never really corrected that. He just didn't have it. He needed to land the perfect punch on the button at the perfect moment to take guys out or set up a stoppage. It was just harder for him to score KOs and that was always his one glaring weakness as an otherwise complete boxing machine.

 

Who made Holmes vomit after the fight, Tyson or Holyfield?

 

As already mentioned, context and styles matter.

Holyfield from 96 would defeat Tyson from 88. Come at me Tyson fanboys .

 

That could explain what would happen if the first Holfield fight in the HW category was with Mike Tyson.

 

Funny that Stewart isn't mentioned, since that might be even more in Tyson's favour. Might it be because it happened after Douglas, so it doesn't fit the narrative that Tyson was past it by then?
