Explain Mayweather Canelo to me ...

Floyd's footwork, defense, and ability to set traps won him the fight. He didn't allow Canelo to get his offense going. I know it's a blanket statement, and it sounds cliche, but he was just on another level.

 

Floyd was -280 ... Thats FAR from slight favorite

If the fights at 154 .. then odds are closer imo,, that's the thing with Floyd always stacking the deck in his favor ... and always the favorite. that's the luxury you get when you are the draw and not a big risk taker. .my way or the highway ,, and fighters don't care they want to get paid ...
Funny thing is if the fights at 154 , with no CW , HE STILL WINS IT imo !!! lol .... thats when you apply context to his fights ,,,, its a lot of smoke and mirrors and his legacy definitely suffers for it ... and you are right its not this monumental win ... at 154 at the very least, it's a different conversation because he didn't have to weaken him to take the fight

 

I think Mosley is the only boxer Mayweather fought that had a longer reach. So that's one thing to consider.

But yes, that's my issue with the Canelo win being trumped as a Rumble in the Jungle moment, Mayweather's win was expected even if he looked great at doing it.

And I still challenge anyone who insists there is no difference between the Canelo Mayweather beat and the one rated today to argue with a straight face that a 152 lb Canelo would bully a 175 lb Kovalev.

 

It was an entire 1.5 pounds less than he'd weighed for Trout and he hadn't voluntarily weighed less than 152 since fighting Matthew Hatton two years earlier. The horror.

 

Even if Canelo wasn't as good then as he is now he was certainly one of Floyd's best opponents after his comeback and had a huge size advantage, but also one of Floyd's easiest wins during these years. Who knows why. Something in their styles that isn't readily visible? Canelo had an off night? Floyd had one of his best nights? Hard to say for sure.

 

I thought Floyd would win, but not as easily as he did. And it wasn't the typical move, peck and steal rounds which was how Floyd often won during those years but a domination at every distance.
