I have to disagree with some points here. Maybe the instruction to not parry the back hand could be considered "good advice" when a bad choice of parrying a looping spaw back hand was chosen. But where is the good training technique that should of preceeded it going into the fight. Whipping a back hand into the body is a southpaw standard strike, probably in the main 4 punches thrown by a southpaw. Leigh went to parry the backhand because he had no real idea/confidence in how to deal with it. As a defence only, catching on the elbow is the basic solid defence for that shot and can easily be changed to a catch/block upstairs should the opponent change trajectory, which is what mick did. I did hear Ben say throw a straight right to counter him and beat him to the punch, which is correct but there was better options Imo. The best option for leigh was to turn on his lead hip and "square mick up" Alternatively mick was on his back foot whilst sneaking his front foot well into range, the transition form back foot to front foot is what put the power into the shot and adds a bit of suprise too. However mick made a mistake when he made this move yhat could of been exploited, his lead arm was down and leigh could of brought him onto his lead hand, shovel hook would of been best shot but hook or even uppercut could also of been landed. There was some more defend and defend and counters available too but the above were the best options. So yes Ben said some advice which on its own was correct but within the available options, there was far more effective options. But before all that where was the training drills on how to defend a looping back hand to the body. I've seen in the past that leigh doesn't defend body shots well/correctly I would of thought that would of been the first thing for Ben to sort when he got leigh. Other than that I agree leigh is having an Indian summer in his career and some of that will be down to Ben. I heard booth/Corner team on at least 2 occasions telling mick to stay off the ropes
I fundamentally agree with what you’re saying though I would put a caveat in that not all styles are right for a fighter. Whilst the high elbow block would be the easiest way to stop getting chinned with looping lefts, Ben might be thinking Leigh is incapable or that sort of defence doesn’t fit him, maybe I’m just surmising. I haven’t seen Mick Conlan use that overhand left too frequently in his career, though I agree the body shots were to be expected and should have been defended against better.
The bank accounts should be investigated and any anomalies explained. The finances of these officials should be regularly audited. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some money there that they couldn't explain.
Ben is the type to watch Pryor vs Arguello and Leonard-Hearns so he can critique the corner work of Futch and Steward. You like to think he'll look back at himself in 10 years and cringe, but I somehow doubt it. Be shocked if he's still around by then anyway.
Frank Warren was very quick to say there is no corruption going on and that no police should be investigating anything, in his latest IFL TV and Seconds Out interviews. I say nothing...
Going on last fights. Taylor had massivley regressed. Terrible game plan against Catterall, he looked sluggish and drained like he cut corners making weight. Taylor looked a complete shadow of himself.
