Who thinks Max Baer beats Liston

Liston destroys Baer in 3, if Baer is fortunate.

Sorry, but clowning and ****ing around was as much a part of Baer's fighting as punching, and with Sonny Liston, he would get ****ed.
Maybe if Baer didn't clown he could take Liston quite a few rounds. But Baer is also pretty short on skills in addition to clowning around.

From what I have seen in films and vids, both seemed to have problems with high quality out boxers. Max Baer does have a good win against a high quality, tricky fighter, Max Schmeling. I do not see a win like that on Sonny's record. Neither one looks very consistent in the fights I have seen. The outcome might depend on which version of each showed up. If it is the Baer who beat Max Schmeling and the Liston who beat Floyd Patterson, I'd lean ever so slightly to Max Baer. It would probably become a war, with both fighters hurt at different times, but both being very hard to finish off. From what I have seen, Max has more stamina in long fights, which explains my gentle lean in his direction.

This is a trick question with a view to subsequent charge, conviction and sentencing initialised via entrapment.

A good post, Shay. That actually puts a good case for max, actually standing a chance.

 

Liston did beat Machen who was a fairly tricky, fast guy.

 

Liston is all wrong for Baer to be honest.

I would have Baer a chance based on his power, and that is about as much as I can say for him.

 

I think best night for best night it’s a 50-50 and it would be a good fight.

Baer took a good shot and with his long range power he would be very dangerous at his best against anyone.

I think comparisons are being made between Louis and Liston here.

Sonny had a fine arsenal of punches. Heavy hands and could fight as well as box. But he’s not Joe Louis.

It was really Joe Louis’s timing that made a fool of Baer..and Sonny didn’t have that. Nobody did.

Louis was sharp and beat you to the punch whereas Liston had lumbering power and would lead with slower blows. They were deadly when he outreached shorter boxers from long range because Sonny would land when an opponent might think he was a safe distance away.

I don’t know what reach Max Baer had but he had plenty of power on the end of a right hand and wouldn’t be so out reached at long range as the fighters Sonny surprised.

I am not saying Max would win but I am not saying he can’t win.

Sonny probably deserves to be favoured here by the majority of historians.. But Max can’t be entirely written off here. Baer had a lot more fights and was extremely deadly at his best.

 

I actually favor Max Baer...in a laughing and smiling contest.

 

Liston eats him up with that thirty-foot jab of his. Baer is just so upright and open for it and didn't have much of one of his own to nullify Liston's.

If you can't do something about Sonny's jab, it's not gonna go too well for you.

 

Baer would eat some jabs from Sonny but his own right hand was long enough to counter over the top of sonny’s jab in the way Schmeling countered Louis. If he was fast enough to counter the Louis jab a couple of times then max can catch Sonny more often. And this could make things more interesting than a lot of people realise.

 

Only high quality boxer who Liston had problems with was Ali, who was the GOAT.

Also, Liston has an excellent win against Machen, another high quality trickster who was #2 when Liston beat him, under only Liston himself.

Liston's stamina is also more proven than Baer's. He went 12 rounds with the aforementioned Machen, throwing the same amount of punches in the last round as he did in the first with no signs of exhaustion.

He also showed excellent stamina against Whitehurst.
