Depends who you speak to I guess.

Doesnt help his cause that two of his biggest fights he got seriously robbed. Doors often close in that situation and fickle fans often forget.

Greb, Armstrong, Pep, Ray Leonard & Hearns.

Every boxing site I go to and forum, people have Sweet Pea ranked at like 30-40, but this is the only site where the average consensus is in the low teens for Whitaker, which in point I do agree with, but dont act like ESB doesnt respect Whitaker when no other site respects him no where near as much as ESB does.

ya'llz problem is you letting the Joy Boys get to you, with the PBF beating Sweet Pea junk and think its really underrating the mans talent.

Hearns does NOT rate above Whitaker. I haven't heard anyone make the case for him to be honest, nor have I ever been to a forum where Whitaker wasn't rated especially highly. In fact, one of the forums I went to it seemed as if he was rated even higher than he is here. He's underrated by guys like Bert Sugar and co., or the supposed actual boxing experts, not by boxing fans. And if I do say so myself, I respect the opinions of the top posters on ESB(as I'm one of few from the General Forum who actually spends most of my time in the Classic) a lot more than any of them.

But direct me to these forums if you can, because from what I've seen that's all false. Not to mention all the fighters you named at the top get PLENTY of recognition.

Whitaker gets plenty of love from fans on boxing forums. Where he gets underappreciated is in pubs, which gather a lot more transitory and casual fans. Don't think he'll ever get the respect he deserves in that circle.

I think he gets a great deal of respect on these boards.

I don't think Whitaker is underappreciated by the people who have seen him fight. I did a thread titled "After Whitaker, who is the greatest of the past 20 years," and although there were a good amount of posts calling for Jones to be higher and just a few for PBF, most of the posts were in Pernell's favor for that recognition. Also, He got more votes than anyone else in my thread "Who was the best pure boxer ever," actually quite a bit more votes than Pep and my other 8 choices. And I've seen two mythical match up's involving him, one where the large majority picked Whitaker in the poll against Aaron Pryor, and the other where Pea got about 3-times as many votes against Mayweather. Maybe he is underappreciated by some (I don't see how he can be if they've actually watched him fight), but everyone I've talked to and most members on ESB seem to rate him very highly.

what do you mean sweet pea was under appreciated..i don't think he is, a lot of people here have him at the top 10. And he clearly has one heck of a resume.
