I understand what you mean. I agree, Ali really however did take a lot of shots flush like candy from his eras top punchers, I don’t think his was a matter of solely having anticipation on his side.
If you take away his great chin then I think he'd still be a great fighter pre-exile. Post exile Ali with a bad chin would mean that he gets KO'd flat by the first left hook from Frazier and wouldn't have beaten Norton or Foreman.
