He isn't anything like a hidden gem for most like say Midget Wolgast who was an unearthed legend, no, he was a classic bomber from the era who racked up an even score of losses and wins impressive and unimpressive. law of averages baby. At the peak of his powers in 1964 he was 37 (31 KOs) (That KO percent rises if you subtract the 6 and 4 rounder PTS fights (31/34) he had 7 Losses (2 Via proper KO) One by a young Carter whom blitzed him, another by Rocky Kalinga a guy who only scored 9 KOs... he wasn't exactly made of Kevlar! The others were all a matter of his very, very cuttable skin apparently and a badly broken nose from Tiger. But his power is undeniable, lot of the guys who survived him at his peak were very, very durable or savvy. He was a fringe sort, an action cowboy who even fought a few early days legend like Griffith who just started stepping into deep waters. Definition of a entertating tv fighter. Pit him in today’s era and he wins the vacsnt IBF knocking out Fernando Guerrero and unifies with the WBO by slashing Lemieux. What they call today “unified champs”.
Not sure about either guys, but what Fernandez did to Torres was brutish, I think he'd do well staying at WW. He'd make it today, he was one for a bit back then and was absolutely HUGE. He dwarfed Tiger in every manner at MW. plausibly could be a LW today, he'd look scary.
The way he blasted Torres shows how overrated Jose Torres is imo. His peek a boo style gets too much credit considering he's one of the three fighters to use it. Fernandez is also great puncher himself, blasted some very good fighters and an had entertaining style. I would say he's the greatest crowd pleaser, I don't describe his style "crowd pleasing", more like simple and straightforward. He's like Joe Louis, one dimensionally straightforward but still very dangerous. Tho I don't think Fernandez was that consistent on putting up shows, but he was less and much better quality action. If you wish to see a couple of more very entertaining Fernandez fights I would highly recommend his bouts with Rory Calhoun and Jose Gonzalez. Very entertaining.
I just think he's a bit overrated as a crowd pleaser. I give him 8/10 for his style, 7/10 in consistency and 8/10 out of quality action in each of his fights. Overall, he's still an entertaining fighter. One of my favs actually (#32). Forget my terrible list last year in Rummy's Corner's video.. I didn't have enough time to recognize more boxers or think of making an actual list.
