This thread has been done before but, Iron Mike in his Prime vs. Fury who takes it after his performance last night
Fury nearly ate some hooks but held in close, Tyson`s whole style was getting inside a long jab and countering with hooks, he was far quicker than Whyte and had faster feet, he would have KO`d Fury.
Mike Tyson's best wins: Ghost of Holmes, Spinks, Bruno... Tyson was also battered a bunch of times. He's not in the league of Tyson Fury. One of the most overrated athletes ever, simply because thugs like to associate with and idolise thugs.
given that neither of them came particularly close to setting up a prime-for-prime contest against the best of their own generation it seems like a hell of a stretch to imagine them doing it three or so generations apart. anyway, I'd make Fury favourite, Mike a dangerous outsider.
The question was about a prime Tyson, when did prime Tyson get battered a bunch of times? Fury got touched up plenty of times by wilder who is lacking in so many areas yet some fans seem to think the real Tyson wouldn't stand a chance!?
You have to be a mentally deranged lunatic to actually believe Tyson Fury would have any kind of chance against Mike Tyson.
Fury's best wins: Ghost of Klitschko, paper champion Wilder who only fought one top ten opponent and Derek Chisora... When this question was asked to Mike Tyson, he simply answered he was named after me and dropped the mic there. That is enough i guess.
Mike Tyson was an absolute beast in his prime with superb footwork that allowed him to have such great leverage in his punches. The leverage was so great that even when Mike Tyson missed, he still had the balance and position to throw another punch with great accuracy and power. His jab was beautiful. His head movement for a come forward boxer was one of the best I have ever seen. Saying all of this, and i'm shocked i'm going to say it, but he would lose to Tyson Fury. Fury too big. What weakness does Fury have? HIs defense at times can let him down, but even when he's hurt he has shown to have great durability and survival ability. Mike Tyson also has a great chin and survival ability, but Mike Tyson has to come forward. The big difference between Fury and Mike Tyson is that Fury is a better longer distance boxer. Mike Tyson declines as the rounds go by while Fury seems to have the better stamina.
You could also say that Tyson has never met anyone like Fury before. The only boxer Tyson has beaten through adversity is Ruddock. When Tyson is in tough fights, he normally gets beaten, and I think Fury is good enough to make this a tough fight. The mental strength of Mike Tyson never matched his ability, because Mike Tyson at his best was the best come forward boxer I have ever seen, but he wasn't no Hagler in the mental department, and a boxers mental strength is just as important, if not more than important than the ability of the boxer.
Fury never fought anyone with that type of ferocity, skill set, speed and power. But Tyson never fought anyone that size with mobility and good boxing iq. So it’s a really fascinating match up. Tyson would be attacking Fury’s body and Fury would be leaning on Tyson with all that size and using that extremely long reach. Willard vs Dempsey comes to mind as far as size differences but Fury is better then Willard and Tyson better then Dempsey. So it’s a good match up and if I was forced to choose I’d lean towards a prime Tyson.
It is easy to pick apart Tysons accomplishments. But if you use that sam lens, I find it hard to see that Fury somehow improves on citing Tyson for anything.
