What we see from this man is simply unprecedented in boxing history. a 6f9 270lb man that moves the way he does, speed, iq, skill. Power to be honest. No way a man that big should be moving the way he does with amazing footwork. usually boxers 6f6 and up start to get stiff. Fury is an anomaly and seems to be the most genetically gifted fighter ever. I know a man with his shape it seems weird to say, but I can't think of anyone else, maybe Wilder too can fall into that camp, but Fury is truly one of a kind
Well, Tyson Fury is the largest "world" heavyweight champion in history. Valuev was slightly bigger, but Valuev was never the "world" champion. Just the WBA champ. And Valuev suffered from a giantism (acromegaly). Fury is just huge. So, yeah, kind of a genetic freak.
He is. Its extremely rare to see it. hes built differently. What astounds me most about Fury is his stamina, he sometimes gets sloppy but hes never been tired, theres always another gear there to switch into when he needs it.
For a man that size yes indeed..look at the difference in athleticism between fury and someone like valuev who is similar in stature.
Hes a big HW with decent athleticism who has been boxing since he was a kid, as opposed to a big guy who took up boxing because they were a big guy, or a guy who is big but lumbering. But if you put him alongside NFL, NBA, rugby guys of similar size I dont think he comes across like anything exceptional in comparison tbh.
He's definitely unique in that he's the biggest heavyweight champion ever but it does seem in general that heavyweights are just getting bigger over time. So he may simply be the first of a new gen of heavyweight champions over 2m tall. 20 years from now he might be average size for a heavyweight champion. I don't think he's especially gifted as an athlete, there are bigger punchers, faster fighters too, he's just really, really big and better than anyone before his size so despite being out sped and out gunned, his size makes up for that. Guys like Valuev, Ustinov and James Oyebola are the only guys I can think of around his size and they were nowhere near as good as him. The thing that is probably exceptional about Fury is his ring IQ. When he first turned pro he didn't look like a world beater and in all honesty I think the fighter who first fought Chisora would of never become world champion with that skill set. But he's evolved a great deal as a fighter, he's far more skilled and complete now due to the work he's put in to the gym. It's his overall skill set that is more impressive to me rather than his natural talent or size. I'm sure if he had been averaged size he would of figured a way to be just as effective with whatever natural gifts he had.
His stamina is off the charts. Lot of guys like Lewis, Joshua, would have trouble with him just because he moves quick enough to stay out of range and yet doesn’t tire. Lot of big guys will just get exhausted against him. I don’t think he is a particularly great athlete outside of that but it’s an amazing attribute. Look how winded Wilder was and Whyte. They can’t keep up with him. And he’s bigger than both.
I think a lot of that has to do with ability to stay relaxed and also control the pace of a fight. He's not really exceptional in terms of work rate for a heavyweight but you can't really out work him or tax his stamina because he never panics and he can just shut down your offence and take a rest when needed. Nobodies ever been good enough to really force the pace against him because he'll just slip and move or tie you up and smother you. He could probably show up over 300lbs against Joyce and would still be fresh for round 12 because he's made it impossible for Joyce to work at his usual high tempo.
Valuev was significantly bigger thought. Just look at the skull and hand size difference between them
Not even a little bit. He's a highly skilled big man which is rare but not because he's a genetic anomaly
