When was Whyte ever a great fighter?

The framing of the question is a little silly and a fallacy at best.
Who said Whyte was great?
Literally one poster on this forum was singing whyte's praises everyone else thought he was a decent contender or they thought he was overrated.
Also with the framing of the question suggests that Whyte would have to be an ATG to have a chance against Fury which is nonsense.
Firstly styles do make fights and secondly Fury hasn''t yet proven to be outright top dog of this era.
His resume is based on beating Vlad and Wilder and that's it. Remember Fury arguably lost to McDermott first time round. so the argument that he beats everyone just due to being big with some skill does not make him unbeatable by any stretch. and like many in the era like Wilder is actually really untested against prime elite opposition. Fighters can look unbeatable until they aren't. meaning it can be difficult for some to visualise how someone gets beaten but fight enough good people with a variety of styles then it's inevitable. It's like the thread about Usyk being a GOAT if he beats Joshua and Fury. Yes it would be a great avhievement but you can't rank someone as the GOAT if they've only had 5-6 fights at Heavyweight. It's like someone saying those six wins are better than Ali's 56 wins. It just doesn't compare at all.

 

Yes and if you re-read the original quote it stated that Joshua AND povetkin took his soul and shattered that chin, not just AJ.

Now onto those biggest wins he had after AJ:

1. Split decision over Chisora. Damn.. SUPER impressive.
2. Headbutt win over Parker where he was dropped and looked awful.
   
3. Come from behind win with a left hook over... Chisora.

Win over a forty year old Covid Povetkin after being obliterated if you count that as a big win.

You are correct though, these are in fact his biggest wins, which is really sad.

 

I agree with you to an extent but you could apply that to anyone in this era really. It's not like they have all fought each other. there's still question marks over everyone in the division. Whyte was only ever a decent contender at best. I know it's the common trait on here to crap on people when they lose or completely overrate them after a win. I'm not a Whyte fanboy but his resume is still deeper than someone like Wilder who held a belt for 5 years. That's the level that we're dealing with.

 

Agreed, however for the record I have been saying Whyte is hot liquid garbage since before Joshua.

However you are correct that the division has some weak resumes but some are weaker than others.

A great fighter? don't think anyone has ever called him great! He is a good fighter just below the top boys. He was legit top 10 and arguably based off his wins vs Parker, chisora, helenius, rivas and povetkin top 5. However he is a class below AJ and Wilder and 2 classes below Fury.

 

Dear god no. He is a good contender, though.

 

Interview any heavyweight, excluding David Haye and they will praise Fury. They all know he is the real don. The big G. Majority of them have sparred him anyway and know. None of them can handle Whyte like that excluding retired Wlad.

 

Compare his resume to everyone else in the top 10.
