LYNCH CERDAN though both had done their jobs exceedingly well and got their chances, they both had more in them. Cerdan rematch with Jake and probably another 1 or 2 defences in him. Benny was at the end but he might have fought a few more fights if not for boozing it up and the sad outcome. Anyway both great losses.
St. Louis southpaw 139-pounder Lemuel Steeples may have been the brightest of that ill-fated bunch. Tons of international competition, beat Milton McCrory several times (lost to Don Curry in a national final I think). Would have likely been a welter in the pro ranks.
I watched a lot of Roman's fights and carried myself as a fan of his as a boxer, I had no idea he died so young. That felt like a slight gut punch.
