Which fighters would've had a much better legacy if they'd just gotten the benefit of the doubt on the scorecards? I'll start with Rocky Lockridge. Two massive fights against Pedroza and Gomez that are widely considered robberies, but for whatever reason they still don't seem to have increased his standing. Not to mention a very close MD loss to Chavez that I've heard some argue in his favor as well. Had he gotten at least 2, if not all 3 of these decisions, he'd have likely had more prominent title runs to boot, further increasing his place among the greats of the era and perhaps all time. So he goes from a second tier champ in the 80s to a potential all time great. Who you got?
Sergey Kovalev getting the decision against Andre Ward in the first fight. I've always thought that had Kovalev had gotten a fair decision win over Ward his career would have gone in a different path. He would have most likely have been LHW champ for a few more years.
Larry Holmes might have retired 50-0. If that didn't happen, he might have become a two-time champ in 1997 against Nielsen.
Pernell Whitaker getting a decision win over Julio Cesar Chavez and Oscar de la Hoya would have definitely further elevated his ATG status. Ismael Laguna having official wins over Vicente Saldivar and Nicolino Locche would have also help him rival with Roberto Duran as Panama's greatest.
Ramirez in the first fight, too. However, unlike the other guys mentioned I feel like Pernell gets his just due for these decisions in the public eye and is rated accordingly.
Lockridge was the first guy I thought of. An interesting pick might be Eddie Davis, against Spinks. Horrible fight to score, razor-thin any way you cut it. It colors Spinks' legend much differently, that's for sure. Nice to see you again, Bujia.....
Rocky Juarez if he got the decisions in the first MAB and Chris John fights his standing would be completely different.
Definitely Jimmy Young. Had he gotten the decision over Norton and Ali he would be rated so much higher.
At the time there was plenty of people who thought Oscar won, me personally I thought Mayweather pulled away in 2nd half. But yeah there is some people who believe Oscar won.
