Emile Griffith v Gaspar Ortega I (NY rounds basis)

    Round 1: Griffith
    Round 2: Griffith
    Round 3: Even
    Round 4: Ortega
    Round 5: Even
    Round 6: Griffith
    Round 7: Griffith
    Round 8: Ortega
    Round 9: Griffith
    Round 10: Griffith

Total: 6-2-2 Griffith (actual scores: 7-3 and 8-1-1 for Griffith and an 8-1-1 for Ortega for a split win for Griffith)

To begin, although always impressed with Griffith, I never really felt he was exciting in any way. But, man, you gotta check out this fight. He and Ortega put on a show. Not to defend the referee's apparent errant score for Ortega, but I will say many of these rounds were close. Ortega fought his heart out. Especially in those middle rounds where he was really lathering Griffith's body. A tremendous effort by both fighters

Griffith was a bit of monster until he killed Paret.

I would tend to agree. The sharpness in his punches seemed to gone in his post-Paret days.

    Jaime Garza vs Carmelo Negron

    1 Garza
    2 Negron
    3 Even
    4 Garza
    5 Stopped on cuts

    39-38 Garza

I haven't seen any Garza fights except for his 1 round war vs Meza, this was a good competitive fight. Garza's left hook is a thing of beauty, one of the best left hooks i've seen. He gets so much snap into it and throws it effortlessly. I was impressed with Garza's punching power and movement, Negron was game and had some good moments himself with his right hand. Basically it was Garza's left hook vs Negron's right hand.

Bit of a shame the fight ended on a cut, because i thought it was an interesting/exciting fight while it lasted. But i might check out some more Garza fights he has a very pleasing style.

    Marcos Villasana v Jamie Garza

    1 Villasana 10-8 knockdown
    2 Villasana 10-8 knockdown
    3 Garza
    4 Villasana
    5 Villasana wins by KO

    39-35 Villasana

This was a very entertaining slugfest while it lasted, despite Garza being floored twice early. He was very much in the fight, giving a good account on himself landing bombs on Villasana. The problem is Villasana can also bang himself, and when you got two guys who can bang going at it in a slugfest. It's gonna come down to who has the better chin, and Villasana's chin is pretty rock solid. So it was always going to be a bit of a uphill battle for Garza who is a bit of a glass cannon.

But i admired Garza's effort he went out there with a killed or be killed attitude, and gave it all he had. Unfortunately Villasana could take his punches better than Garza could take his. And in the 5th round after having Garza trouble in the 5th round, Villasana finally finished it off with a peach of a left hook.

    Bobby Berna vs. Jaime Garza

I didn't bother scoring this fight as it only went 2 rounds, but Garza does it again. Involved in yet again another great little short slugfest, Garza came out banging as he usually does, in what was a very entertaining 1st round which Garza was on his way to winning. But was caught with a Southpaw right hook that dropped him right at the end of the round. Berna came out for round 2 trying to press the advantage, and it looked like he might be having some success. But walked into a counter left hook from Garza and down went Berna, he was badly hurt and Garza scored another knockdown and down went Berna again. Garza sensing his chance to finish Berna off went in for the finish, and pounded Berna with some great shots uppercuts and left hooks and Berna went through the ropes, the referee rightly stops the fight and Garza wins by TKO in 2nd round.

This one is for @OP_TheJawBreaker to add to his lists of short great fights, and i think that's the end of my Jamie Garza binge for today, but a very entertaining kill or be killed fighter and i enjoyed watching his fights.

D, I scored this about a year ago. You and I saw it the same. This is what I wrote:

    Marcos Villasana v Jaime Garza

Poor Jaime. When I saw this matchup I didn't think it was going to be good for him but it would be for the fans (and Villasana). Garza was a Bob Satterfield-type of fighter. He could knock you dead but had a susceptible jaw. And against Villasana who had a great jaw and could pop, this didn't bode well. Indeed, Garza was down once in round 1 & 2 before Villasana lowered the boom in the 5th. I was nice to Garza, giving him the 3rd when he actually boxed well and watched himself, but it was a matter of time. I had a score of 39-35 for Villasana after 4 rounds.

Good scrap, thanks for the recommendation! Here's how I had it, very close to your score:

    1. Even
    2. Johnson
    3. Johnson
    4. Johnson
    5. Jimenez
    6. Johnson
    7. Jimenez
    8. Johnson
    9. Jimenez
    10. Johnson
    11. Johnson
    12. Jimenez

116-113 Johnson. Jimenez seemed to do so much better as a southpaw, nailing Johnson with left crosses over his low-held right. Not sure why he kept switching back to orthodox. Hell of a chin on him too. Johnson could punch a bit, and he never flinched. Johnson just outhustled him.

Hasim Rahman v Oleg Maskaev I

    Round 1: 10-9 Rahman
    Round 2: 10-9 Maskaev
    Round 3: 10-9 Maskaev
    Round 4: 10-9 Rahman
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Rahman
    Round 7: 10-9 Rahman
    Round 8: Maskaev KOs Rahman

Total through 7 completed rounds: 68-66 Rahman (actual scores: 68-65, 68-65 and 70-63 all for Rahman)

For a heavyweight contest between 2 big men (both app. 235) this wasn't bad at all. they were not lumbering, they were firing crisp shots to head and body. A fight I enjoyed. The KO was quite the anomaly, with Maskaev knocking Rahman out of the ring. Regardless of how he fell, body language would tell you he was out regardless of the fall. Good fight.

Jose Napoles vs Billy Backus 2

    1 Even
    2 Napoles
    3 Backus
    4 Napoles
    5 Napoles
    6 Napoles
    7 Even
    8 Napoles wins by TKO

    69-66 Napoles

So one of the first threads i made on the forum was a Napoles thread, i noticed recently someone bumped it so it reminded to start watching his fights again.

So onto the fight Napoles was cut in literally the first 10 seconds, and it looked like it could maybe go the way of the 1st fight. Napoles was also briefly rocked by Backus in the 1st round, in which was a pretty evenly fought round, the 2nd round was very exciting and reminiscent of the 3rd round in their 1st fight with alot of back and forth action, Napoles was also able to return the favour and cut Backus in the 2nd round.

I felt like the fight was pretty competitive for 3 rounds just like their 1st meeting was, but Napoles started to distance himself from Backus after 3rd round. As Napoles started to find the range with his pin point accurate right hand, which was landing frequently and Backus was starting to swell up.

I want to discuss the actual stoppage itself which i found a little bit strange, so despite Napoles best punch being the right hand vs Backus. It was actually two solid left hooks that started the trouble for Backus. And after another combination Backus went down, he got up but his eye was badly swollen i don't think he could see properly, Napoles followed up his attack and floored Backus again. But this is where it got a little bit strange for me, why did the referee call the ring doctor after Backus got floored for 2nd time ? not only could it of allowed Backus time to recover. But the referee shouldn't of needed the doctors opinion at that point, and should of just used his own initiative. In the end it didn't matter as the doctor stopped the fight anyway, but i thought that kind of strange weird moment to call the ring doctor.

Anyway good performance from Napoles, nice pin point accurate punches to revenge the loss to Backus.

Jose Napoles vs Hedgemon Lewis I

    1 Napoles
    2 Lewis
    3 Lewis
    4 Napoles
    5 Napoles
    6 Napoles
    7 Lewis
    8 Lewis
    9 Napoles
    10 Napoles
    11 Napoles
    12 Napoles
    13 Lewis
    14 Lewis
    15 Napoles

    Napoles 144-141

So in this fight Napoles wasn't quite his normal smooth slippery skillful self, he had to fight a bit of dog fight and outhustle Lewis to win this one. Napoles was also always the aggressor landing many body punches, Lewis was boxing nicely at range using his jab. I thought the fight was pretty even after 8 rounds, Lewis would have good moments troubling Napoles with his effective jab especially in rounds 7 and 8. But Napoles turned it up a gear and came out very aggressively in the 9th round and that set the tone for a few rounds.

What surprised me is that Lewis, was able to make a nice little comeback in rounds 13 and 14. Even rocking Napoles with a right hand in the 14th, despite taking many body punches. To Napoles credit i think he sensed maybe the fight was getting closer, so he decided to let it all hang out in the 15th, and this was one of those rounds where Napoles won on sheer effort alone.

Not the pretty boxing were used to seeing from Napoles, but he won a close but clear decision based on his workrate and body punching.
