Earnie Shavers and Mike Weaver were less than perfect but they were dynamite hitters in the ring. Both received shots at the title on a few occasions, Mike did win the WBA title from John Tate on March 31 1980.
@cross_trainer something for some reason I think you'd enjoy, about punching. Weaver I noticed used to place one hand on a guys lat/arm to get sneaky, dirty leverage into shots. I can't remember the fight but he held onto them and just about jumped into an uppercut. It looked similar to the below clip even though that one didn't land. @OP_TheJawBreaker Nice vid. Tony Galento I guess? Hey, I love Tony Galento. I still pretty much disgust everybody who thinks he's a bum just bcuz how unimpressive he looks on film. Hell! My mind is still triggered by the fact someone made a thread stating that the Tyson from the Roy Jones fight would have a chance of beating Galento. I have never seen such an insulting matchup! Tho despite that, he still might be some of the worst to win a title. He's a straight out cheater with obvious dirty tactics. If he won the title, he may have headbutted, threw low blows and even thumb the person's eye in the process!
I'd say Mark Wills he beat Greg Page twice, gave a prime Tim Witherspoon a tough fight. And went the distance with hard hitting Gary Mason. If Wills was on his game and caught one of the 80s Heavyweights, at the right time like he did Greg Page. I think he could maybe spring an upset somewhere. Not sure against what alphabet champion of 80s, but they were all inconsistent so he'd have a shot.
Jimmy Young eventually beats a big name for the title. If he and Ali fought ten times he'd get close decision eventually.
Vaughn Bean, maybe if he gets a shot earlier he's able to pull it off vs Seldon or on his last legs Bruno, or McCall. I like the Mark Wills call though
I think Jimmy Young fought one of the very worst versions of Ali ... Ali against Holmes and Ali against Berbick may have only been worse ... and Young still couldn't convincingly win (and was ducking outside the ropes trying to avoid getting hit). And Ali wasn't the defending champ against Holmes and Berbick, so Young arguably fought the ABSOLUTE WORST version of Ali as champion ... and lost. Every other version of Ali who defended the title beats Jimmy Young easier.
Shavers. Give him unlimited title shots over his career and he's eventually going to grab some belts just off landing lucky shots.
