Cooney had the misfortune to take on, one of the greatest heavyweight champ s in history. And yet still gave Larry hell. Long after he knew he was gonna lose, he still dug in there. He wasn't the greatest challenger by a long shot, but he was far from the worst. He was also one of the most colourful of them. Glad to hear that he and Larry are now great friends too.
My thoughts on the documentary: Cooney needed psychological help, he came unglued like Tyson, but not as much talent to first reach the pinnacle. Great power & an underrated uppercut though. Also they commented on King making it about race. King is a Monster, but why only show Gerry getting those national magazine covers, not Holmes, not say anything about the amount of real ugly racism against Holmes, all those white celebrities jumping on his bandwagon, the biased scorekeeping before Holmes stopped Cooney... Reagan had a phone line ready for the winner-only if it was in Gerry's locker room! None of it Cooney's fault-& Norton at 35 & in that condition was not far gone. But they were not responsile in exposing the amount of bigotry around then.
