Tbh I've never thought he was all that. I think guys like Cleveland Williams, Razor Ruddock, etc were all better punchers and better fighters.

Are we talking with their single best punch? Or overall? For example, I'd bet Cooney's left hook is just as hard as Tyson's, but how about his right hook, right uppercut, right cross, etc?

Plenty of guys had one really good punch. Tyson was one of the rare ones who had big power in every punch.

No one mentions Wilder, although his "nuclear right" can bring down anyone with one punch.
From second-rate boxers (most), to Tyson Fury.
Of course Wilder doesn’t have a combination, workrate and “speed kills philosophy” like Mike Tyson, but he has a stronger punch.

Maybe Shavers, Foreman, Wilder etc, it's hard to say but several of Tyson's opponents said someone else hit them hardest.

No way did Herbie Hide hit hardder than Tyson, Tucker was on the slide when Hide stopped him.

Also his right uppercut often followed a hard rigt hook to the body.

Yeah weirdly most fighters tend to pick someone whose punches they took well or better over someone that left them lying on the canvas seeing stars.

Well Holyfield, Lewis, Ruddock and Tucker all said someone else hit harder and they didn't finish lying on the canvas.

I weren’t talking specifically bout Tyson but in general that fighters normally don’t say that the person that badly knocked them out is the one that hit them the hardest but more often then not they say someone else who didn’t knock them out or even down

Shavers, Foreman, Wilder, probably Liston. All hit harder.

I think both Wlad and Weaver hit just as hard with both hands. Possibly Lyle. Frazier's hook was just as hard. Lewis' right hand for sure. Bowe's uppercut, Morrison and Tua's hook.

Fighters' weightlifting performance seems to have surprisingly little correlation with which fighters are considered strong in the ring.

Experiments done sometime in the 2000s with pressure sensors showed that the hardest punching member of the Olympic team was one of the lighter fighters; not a heavyweight.

Finally, picks for the hardest puncher in the RING "Best I Faced" series can be surprising.

All in all, I don't think you're going to estimate how hard a puncher can hit a force plate (or whatever) by watching his in-ring performances. At least not with enough accuracy to decisively rate him above or below Tyson.

Many guys hit harder than Tyson, maybe he was a 9 out of 10 for pure power maximum.
That means many individuals over time-it is like being 7' tall. It is pretty rare, but you can find a lot of people around the world taller.

But you must be talking about RELATIVE to their division right?
It is unlikely anybody who weighed in at the MW limit at fight time hit even as hard as Tyson.

Assuming a force plate is accurate at communicating how hard someone hits.
Janitor wrote a while back he saw girls get high scores just by slapping some.

There is not much correlation between being super strong & hitting hard.
Being strong on average is an advantage, but some generate power more from long limbs, speed & leverage.
Also there is the law of diminishing returns above certain sizes-& strength.
Massive muscles may limit mobility & speed where just big ones would do better.

But there absolutely is a general correlation between size & power.
Just like in weightlifting competitions-where there is a law showing how while absolute strength increases, not in proportion to their size.
So say we are looking at a 150 & 225 lbs weight division.
You can look up the world records (& I have not chosen the heaviest category where there is no incentive to stay lean, shich would be an unfair comparison...) I'll bet you can find no case where the world records are proportionate in cases where there is a large size differential-in this case the records will not be 50% greater for the 225 lb. person.

Some guys hit way above their weight classes-I recall many years ago a very light guy on a US Olympic team harder than a bunch of divisions above him-up to 154 I believe.
BUT I am skeptical that the hardest hitting guy at anything well below HW could ever actually hit harder than a bunch of the big guys.
Julian Jackson had atomic power where he competed-but would you entertain that it was even impressive for a modern HW?
It was always said a HW jab is like a LHW power punch.
Now there are guys who transcend that-but do you believe even Bob Foster, or someone not much heavier like a Curtis Shepherd, hit like Earnie Shavers?
Of course the chins tend to be better when a man is larger, but still no HW who faced Foster & Foreman-to take 2 similar names-is likely to say Foster hit just as hard right?
Even though Foster weighed up to the mid-late 180's as a HW, his frame just could not hold more...

Now I could be wrong, but I believe that is about where-such as in measuring speed of a pitched or hit ball-we reach a level where it is questionable IF the greatest SHWs could strike harder than someone (with preternatural//disproportionate power) could even hit harder in absolute terms. Maybe, maybe not.

So I wonder if the measurement was correct IF we are talking something well below HW or LHW.
I recall a video on youtube showing a girl hitting harder than some dude-sure she was a forceful boxer/puncher, but in that case she would up, he offered a straight shot or jab.

I do not think of you have any group of power punchers who are pro fighters, & they all try their best, even the best guy around 160 is not going to hit as hard, let alone harder, than a real bruiser at well over 200 lbs.

Frazier wasn`t heavy enough to hit as hard as Tyson, nobody under 220 hit as hard as Tyson except Shavers.
