With Amir Khan's retirement, it seems appropriate to discuss this - as truthfully, if there was a Hall of Fame he deserves induction into, this has to be it!! But, surely, there are others who might qualify among prominent rated fighters. We're not talking about legendary tomato cans like the appropriately-named Eric Crumble, but rather world-class or borderline world class operators who tasted canvas repeatedly and/or were brutally KOd on multiple occasions. Some candidates who come to mind are Floyd Patterson, Ingemar Johansson, Ken Norton, Leon Spinks, Gerry Cooney, Terry Norris, among many many others. Who else deserves induction?
Gotta put Wilder in there. Who else tasted canvas against guys like Dustin Nichols or Harold Sconiers?
Well, this makes for a question and I would be curious to hear forum member's thoughts. I don't think of a boxer with a glass jaw as someone who gets knocked as noted in the post by @WildersGlassJaw. Fighter's of many level's get knocked down and heavyweight's have a better chance of going down from a punch by a lesser fighter than anyone else. I think of a glass-jawed fighter as one takes one or two good pops to the chin, goes down and doesn't get up. What do you think?
If you hit the canvas against carnival fat men like Nichols and professional losers like Sconiers, and then continue to fight nothing but stiffs for the next 5 years, and carefully selected journeymen and mediocre contenders after this -- then yeah, you likely have some problems with punch resistance. Getting stopped by a light-hitter like Fury should have erased ALL doubts about how ridiculously fragile Wilder's chin is.
Tbh, I don't think Ken Norton belongs here because he fought against legendary punchers like Foreman and Shavers. He went the distance against 2 ATG heavyweights in Ali and Holmes so I don't think it's fair to put Norton here since at least he didn't get knocked out by every elite level talent he faced (unlike guys like Amir Khan).
Glass Jaws exist in boxing. Always have, always will. I think Andre Ward deserves entry into the GJHoF. He should have got a ten count when dropped against feather-fisted greengrocer Boone. The ref gave a slow count.
Yep. The very fact that the guy needs to refer to fights that noone has seen from over a decade ago shows how little he has to support the “Wilder’s glass jaw” notion. It doesn’t take 11 rounds of pummelling from a man who has 40lbs on them for a glass jawed fighter to get KOd. Look at Whyte, who was out with a grazing uppercut. Wilder’s chin is average at worst, I could say the same about Joshua as well.
