I hate to blaspheme, but I’d rather find a good copy of Chiaverini vs. Edgar Ross than a grainy Harry Greb video.
Oh, man, if you found Chiaverini v Mad Dog Ross I would be so grateful. But God only knows if that was ever filmed.
Larry Holmes vs Brian Nielsen 1 Holmes 2 Holmes 3 Nielsen 4 Nielsen 5 Most of the round was missing so i have to score it 10-10 6 Holmes 7 Nielsen 8 Holmes 9 Nielsen 10 Holmes 11 Holmes 12 Holmes 116-113 Holmes So the 5th round unfortunately over 2 minutes of the round was missing, so there was no way for me to score that round. But apart from that Holmes was a very clear winner and was very hard done by in this one, Holmes still had that great left jab and showed some good right hands to the head and body, and was able to constantly get off first and land the harder cleaner more effective punches. Nielsen at times was able to steal a few rounds, when Holmes took rounds off and laid on the ropes and allowed Nielsen to outhustle him. But apart from that Nielsen was not able to have much success landing clean punches, or be effective with his aggression. I think i was quite fair to Nielsen giving 4 rounds, i easily could of scored the 4th round even or had Holmes edging it. I see no case for Nielsen winning this fight what so ever.
Jermall Charlo vs Austin Trout 1 Trout 2 Charlo 3 Charlo 4 Trout 5 Trout 6 Charlo 7 Trout 8 Charlo 9 Trout 10 Trout 11 Trout 12 Even 116-113 Trout I thought it was a very competitive fight in the first 8 rounds, Charlo was able to steal some rounds. Being the aggressor and tagging Trout with some hard right hands along the ropes. Trout landed some very eye catching straight left hands and had some nice body work, i also liked the counter punching from Trout. After 8th round though Trout started to distance himself from Charlo, as Charlo's clean effective right hands he was landing earlier. Were no longer landing as Trout outboxed him in the middle ring, landing the more eye catching straight left hands and counter shots. The 12th round was close i thought Trout had the better ring generalship, but Charlo landed the most eye catching punch of the round, i could see the round being a toss up. Overall i feel like Trout made this more his type of fight. He had the better defence, cleaner effective punches, better ring generalship, and i thought he clearly won a competitive fight based on rounds 8-11.
I didn't bother scoring Jaron Ennis vs Sergey Lipinets, Ennis won every round pretty comfortably. Although Lipinets did bravely try and fight back at times. I have to say though I'm hugely impressed with Ennis, his power, speed, technique, is incredible. I also love the sharpness of his punches nothing is ever wasted, I don't like overrating fighters too early. But he does look to have something special about him, can't wait to see him fight the elite Welterweights.
Cotto vs Mayorga Round 1: 10-9 cotto. Mayorga had moments but cotto landed the cleaner shots. Round 2: 10 - 9 cotto. Close round but lots of mayorgas shots were blocked. Round 3: 10-9 cotto. Clear cotto round. Round 4: 10-9 cotto. Closer round esp due to some hard short by Mayorga at end of round but cotto controlled most of the round. Round 5: 10-9 cotto. Just a much better fighter. Round 6: 10-9 cotto Round 7: 10-9 Mayorga. Making it more his fight though still many of his shots are arm punches or blocked Round 8: 10-9 cotto. Round 9: 10-10. Mayorga won start and end of round cotto controlled middle with more effective punching. Round 10: 10-9 cotto. Mayorga had a good uppercut in there but cotto jabbing him to death Round 11: 10-9 cotto. Cotto basically took the round off but still won it bc Mayorga didn't do anything effective. Round 12: TKO stoppage for cotto after a knockdown. Scorecard at time of stoppage: 109- 101 cotto Not a bad fight that I had never watched before.
Errol Spence vs Yordenis Ugas 1 Ugas 2 Spence 3 Spence 4 Spence 5 Spence 6 Ugas 7 Spence 8 Spence 10-8 no knockdown but i thought Spencer was too dominant 9 Spence 10 Doctor stops the fight because Ugas's right eye is completely closed 88-82 Spence So just caught up on this fight, i been more interested in watching the Welterweight's since i've watched Ennis recently. I thought this was a very good performance from Spence especially after a lay off. The first 6 rounds Ugas had some success with counters, especially with the right hand, i thought the the fight was semi competitive. Despite Spence mostly having the best of it with his higher output and body punches. Ugas was in the right with his counter punching, although i felt he was standing infront of Spence too much allowing him to tee off. The big moment for Ugas came in the 6th round, when he knocked Spence's mouthpiece out with a right hand. And Spence seemed distracted looking down at the mouthpiece, waiting for the referee to call time and replace it. And Ugas rightfully so took advantage and whacked Spence again with a right hand, that knocked him into the ropes and seemed to stun Spence. But credit to Spence for coming back in the 2nd half of the round. After Ugas's best round of the fight it was all Spence, as he turned it up a gear with his output and body punching. And really started to put a beating on Ugas especially in the 8th round, in which he landed 46 punches and i thought it was dominant enough for a 10-8 round. Going into the 10th round Ugas's eye was getting worse, the doctor had already had a good look at the swelling 2 rounds previous. But this time the doctor decides to rightfully stop the fight as Ugas could not see out his right eye. This was a big statement made from Spence, no one has dominated Ugas like this before, but can we please see Ortiz, Crawford, Spence, Ennis, start mixing it up and fighting eachother ? there's so many good fights to be made here.
Don Curry vs Lloyd Honeyghan WBA, WBC and IBF World Welterweight Title, Caesars Hotel & Casino, Atlantic City, USA - 27th September 1986 Round 1: 10-9 Honeyghan. Very close round. Curry working the jab but Honeyghan with some effective combinations and good ring generalship. Round 2: 10-9 Honeyghan. Clear Honey round. rocked Curry several times. Round 3: 10-9 Honeyghan. Round 4: 10-9 Honeyghan. Close but Curry doesn't have an answer for Honey. Round 5: 10-9 Honeyghan. Dominant round for Honey. Round 6: 10-9 Honeyghan Curry retired on his stool after the 6th. My score at time of stoppage: 60-54 Honeyghan. I gotta watch some more Honeyghan fights I had only seen the Starling loss before this one. Very eye pleasing style imo.
Stevenson vs Herring This was an absolute schooling. Stevenson couldn't miss with either hook and just picked his punches to perfection. Herring couldn't really trouble him at all and I had Stevenson taking a clean sweep of the rounds. The stoppage was awful, total bs, but the victory was very dominant.
Ali vs Patterson II - 9/20/1972 (inspired by the thread on classic today) Round 1: 10-9 Patterson. Wow Floyd is definitely taking a page from Frazier for this fight. He's even hitting his hands together like Joe did. Very light on his feet, more frentic movement and leaping shots. Round 2: 10-9 Patterson. Closer but pretty ineffective round for both men. Ali scoring with occasional jabs, clearly worried about getting countered. Patterson scored some good looking shots but a lot were rolled with or blocked. Round 3: 10-9 Patterson. Ali had a good sequence but mostly Patterson roughed him up this round. The announcer said something about a back injury Patterson had when they had their first fight, so if that's legit it could (along with Ali's decline) put in perspective why Floyd is doing pretty well so far. Round 4: 10-9 Patterson. Ali trying to steal the round with antics but he looks listless and distracted and tired. Round 5: 10-9 Patterson. Much better round for Ali and he seemed more engaged but Patterson really seems to be flummoxing him. That sidestep-overhand when Ali had him against the ropes was truly beautiful. Round 6: 10-9 Ali. Most exciting round so far. Very back and forth until Ali took over the last third of the round. The gap in power is apparent. Round 7: 10-9 Ali. Despite the British announcer acting like it's a total massacre, Patterson had some moments. But clear Ali round. Patterson's eye looking completely closed. Mercante stops the fight. Score at time of stoppage: 68-65 Patterson
Angel Manfredy vs Jorge Paez - 8/2/1997 Round 1: 10-9 Manfredy. Good round. Paez landed some good shots but they were single shots Manfredy landing in combination. Round 2: 10-9 Manfredy. Another good, close round but edged Manfredy. Round 3: 10-9 Manfredy. great round. Again edged Manfredy just landing more big shots esp lead uppercut. Round 4: 10-9 Manfredy Round 5: 10-9 Manfredy. closer round but still. Round 6: 10-9 Manfredy Round 7: 10-9 Manfredy Round 8: Manfredy stops Paez. Score at time of stoppage: 70-63 Nice little scrap despite being pretty one-sided.
There are some points later in his career where Maromero was too far up in weight and too far up in class and just over his head, but Paez at feather (and sometimes at 130) was a helluva fighter. Awkward as hell and just kept coming. I could watch Paez and Troy Dorsey (and his orchestra) fight 100 rounds and it would probably be 51-49 … and we’d be arguing who had the edge. I feel like you always got your money’s worth with Paez. A showman but also at heart a warrior.
Thanks for the suggestion! Jorge Paez vs Troy Dorsey 1 2/4/1990 - IBF Featherweight Championship Note: Paez's hair is distracting as all hell trying to watch this fight. Round 1: 10-9 Dorsey. Paez pretty inactive for most of the round, so Dorsey gets it on aggression and volume, but when Paez turned it on, appears to be the much faster and crisper puncher. Round 2: 10-8 Paez for the knockdown though Dorsey did some good work that round despite the KD. Round 3: 10-9 Dorsey. Very very close round. Almost scored it 10-10 but I Dorsey's punch output is making the difference for me. Round 4: 10-9 Dorsey. Paez still getting outworked. Round 5: 10-9 Dorsey Round 6: 10-9 Dorsey Round 7: 10-9 Dorsey Round 8: 10-9 Dorsey Round 9: 10-9 Dorsey. Paez really giving rounds away. Only fighting in spurts, taking a lot of shots. Round 10: 10-10. Great round. Round 11: 10-9 Paez. Another really close round but I edged towards Paez. Round 12: 10-10. Another fantastic round that was too close to call for me. My score: 117-112 Dorsey. Actual Scores: 114-113 Paez, 115-113 Dorsey, 115-113 Paez for a Paez SD win. Seems like the wrong guy got the decision to me but maybe Paez was blocking more of those shots than he appeared to? I suppose they all scored 10 and 12 for Paez and then would just need to swing one more round to go for Paez. Judging is very subjective but hard for me to see it as a Paez win tbh. ----------------- Edit: Watched their 2nd fight and put it in here rather than spamming this thread: Jorge Paez - Troy Dorsey 2. IBF Featheweight Championship 07/8/1990 Round 1: 10-9 Dorsey. Dorsey is throwing a lot of arm punches but theres some good effective shots in there. Paez landing with some good shots but just not active enough for me. Round 2: 10-9 Dorsey. Very close round. Dorsey doesn't really seem to be deterred by Paez's punches any more than Paez is by Dorsey's, despite his clowning. Round 3: 10-9 Paez. Another really close round but Paez finally active and outboxing Dorsey enough of the round to edge it for me. Round 4: 10-10. Really good round. Paez had it until he took off the last 30 sec. Round 5: 10-9 Paez (just barely another close round) Round 6: 10-10. Can't believe how close these rounds are. This fight is even better than the first. Round 7: 10-9 Paez. His best round since the KD round in the first fight. Round 8: 10-10. Feel rediculous scoring this many even rounds but this fight is just so close. Round 9: 10-9 Dorsey Round 10: 10-9 Paez Round 11: 10-9 Paez. Dorsey fading. Round 12: 10-9 Paez. very close one. my score 117-114 Paez. I thought Dorsey was finally slowed down by cuts and an accumulation of punches for Paez to pull out the victory. Actual scores: 116-112 Dorsey, 115-113 Paez, 114-114 Draw for a SD Draw. 2nd fight was even better.
