https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/b...ges-Kell-Brook-come-retirement-fight-him.html Why on earth is Chris Eubank Jr calling out Brook even after the retirement? Yes it’s a payday but give Brook some respect he’s made his decision. Eubank should be chasing GGG now as the Canelo fight looks to be on hold.
Jrs lack of self awareness is actually concerning. Has the audacity to tell GGG to fight live opponents (yes he did that) and then turns around and calls out an old faded welterweight who's announced his retirement in the same interview. Even mentioned fighting welterweight Conor Benn "down the line", Jr is a joker, he isn't interested in fighting anybody of note, he just wants money, that's all, easy money.
If he'd have fought Golovkin back in 2016 he'd have been stopped, I'm sick of hearing about Jnr's supposed iron chin, he's avoided it getting properly tested for his whole career barring a fight with an injured Groves where he looked lost.
Career management is bizarre. Unlikely that he has found the right combination of fighting winnable fights with big pay days either. Don’t get me wrong, he’ll have had some big pay days in there (Groves, BJS, Degale) because like him or not he is a big draw in the UK. I don’t think he swerves hard fights as much as people make out. He fought BJS after only 3 years as a pro with no amateur experience. He’s actually fought tough British level boxers like Spike, Blackwell and Williams where we throw the book at others (particularly Matchroom fighters en masse who completely avoiding those bouts). However there are splatterings of nobodies on his resume in that period and over hill fighters. If there was ever a fight were I thought ‘these guys don’t know what they are doing’ was the Korobov fight. He’s a supremely skilled southpaw, who had the style to give Eubank fits. Eubank’s only chance was to catch up to him late when he likely gassed. The arm injury got him out jail. But what was the payoff there?! I just think he’s been a bit inactive and mismanaged and now he’s just settling into the role of biggest paydays with no real ambitions of making his mark.
I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Try and make "name" fights. Tell everyone how good he is, without really proving it and just count the $$$. A good win over Williams slightly soured by the fact he messed around late in the fight and took needless shots he didn't need to...but that should be the springboard to getting closer to someone like Charlo, GGG, Muniga but I just can't see it. He'd rather call out undersized has beens than win world title. Strange mindset because he does have ability.
Funny thing is in a post fight interview he looked annoyed when people, especially RJJ, when talking about fighting Brook. G
Clearly Eubank’s ambitions to have any real legacy in the sport have taken a nosedive in favour of chasing the coin. The Brook fight represents millions of pounds against a well known fighter, that can sell out a big arena in what will be a fairly low risk fight with Eubank starting as odds on favourite. It’s the dream for him, because he then can go on to the next one until he is derailed with a loss, which he likely will be before long. Even against Liam Williams I thought Eubank lost most of the rounds that he didn’t score a knockdown in - it was one of the weirdest fights I’ve watched.
Very odd. Once Williams regrouped mid rounds he was landing the straight right often enough to bother Eubank who started clowning and throwing odd sweeping punches that missed. If Eubank had jumped on him after the KD's it was over and would have been impressive. Instead it just looked weird. Williams couldn't hold a decent punch with rumors of a hard weight cut and Eubank's technicall flaws were there for everyone to see. Even this version of GGG pushes Eubank back with the jab and lands loads of power shots.
Maybe the barrier to Brook fighting Eubank was Khan' rematch option. Initial noises after the fight were that Khan was going to exercise his option. Now given the beating he took I doubt that, but he may have been looking at using the clause to generate some step aside money? So Brook retires 7th May and about a week later Khan follows suit. Three days later Eubank pipes up. With Khan publicly retired, it's a lot harder to enforce a clause, or more likely, demand compensation for a clause, that's dependent on fighting. Eubank may know exactly what he's doing in other words and he may have private signals from the Brook camp that he'd be up for a swift return from retirement and a payday now that Khan is out of the picture from a legal point of view.
