I can't at present recall reading that Jack Johnson was ever cut in a fight. Perhaps someone can remind me of when he was.
Tommy Hearns says 'Hello'. To be fair, Tommy Hearns then went on to say 'Bye, bye.' Bad move, cutting Hagler.
Duran was rarely cut, but Hearns did cut him, and Hagler against Hearns. Yet I don't recall Hagler being cut much either. The cut against Hearns was not typical, and I know what caused it. I figured it out rather easily after seeing the fight once trying to focus on it.
At 1:19 on the top rank clock left in the round, or on the youtube video at 2:04 on the video in round one the cut happens immediately after Leonard says " look for Hagler's hook" and boom right then. After it happens Tompkins says " now that was the right hand of Tommy Hearns and it did catch Hagler" So, what happened is Hearns was breathing out of his mouth and since he was taller they both threw a punch inside and Hagler moved his head inside to his left and slid it inadvertently against Hearns mouth as Hearns was also punching moving toward Hagler, and it slit the cut on Hagler's forehead.. Soon after Tompkins mentions the blood.. There is no doubt in my mind on it.. And this is the HBO video. On the Bernstein and Al Michaels video the blood is mentioned right after that also. There is no doubt in my mind... It was easy to see once you focus on it because of the awkwardness of the cut. Marvin Hagler vs Tommy Hearns Round 1 | GREATEST ROUND OF BOXING | ON THIS DAY - YouTube
Just as Marvin landed a shot right to poor Tommy's nads! Instant karma! Tommy never once complained about the low blows. In his prime, he never lacked durability or especially heart. This fight took some of his endurance away forever but he was still as brave a man as ever set foot in the ring. He took enough punishment in this eight minutes to have put many a tough middleweight away. Not to mention the pain in his hand which he kept throwing regardless. Another breed.
He sure was and underrated because of his two big losses. His biggest fault was his own and trying to hard to please himself or the crowd with a knockout, that he left himself open. He could have just boxed and countered and won decisions like he did with Virgil Hill, but he saw himself as an entertainer.
Hagler was cut in multiple fights so while not a bleeder he isn't leather skinned either. A couple of these were in big fights too against Hearns and Duran. The cut against the latter actually stifled him for some rounds as he went cautious and allowed Duran back into the fight, well on the judges scorecards anyway.
