Imagine, in another universe, where all fights are fixed at 36 minutes but no bell, no rest period s. If it reaches its end when the time is up, then the 3 judges ringside make the decision of the winner. There is also a 3 kd rule in effect for all fights. Who suffers most in this scenario and who takes advantage?
Guys with good defence, stamina and an ability to pace themselves would do better I think. If you blow your wad under those rules you're done for.
Foreman could get a few guys out fast, no sweat. Soon as he meets a fella like Ali or Young, that can take a shot or avoid getting hit that much, he's beat. Can't see George lasting that long with out a break at least.
Unlimited time in fights would be irrelevant in the case of Ali vs foreman. As it stands George was taken out in eight as you know. Where it would become a problem is in fights like Holmes vs Cobb where a prolonged merciless beating would end in permanent disability
We could rename the game Punch Out like the 1980's video game. The first man to fall and stay there, kind of like a street fight with no rules, with the exception of kicking. Reminds me of the Clint Eastwood classics of the late 1970's, Every Which Way But Loose, Every Which Way You Can from 1980.
Yeah, that's what I meant. For every Sullivan or guy whose name has survived the corrosive sands of time after racking up a whopping couple of dozen bouts, probably nine or ten obscure nobodies laced up a time or two, got trounced over the course of several hours, and had their whole prime and half their soul beaten from them in one fell swoop of an evening.
With no breaks every 3 minutes, I think most of the elite boxers would have changed their training methods and the cream would still have risen to the top. (IMHO, of course.) Disclaimer: The word "cream" was not intended to be a reference to Jersey Joe Walcott.
If you instituted this rule around the advent of television, boxing would have died. No commercials, no TV, no money. (Or maybe it would have existed in darkened, smoke-filled bingo halls and armories and nobody would have ever made any money to speak of.)
