This is a good question. But why not just say the best version of both fighters?
    And no PEDs for Toney.

Because the best version of Toney is a middleweight? Also, No PEDs? Why don’t we just not overcomplicate it and use the version of Toney that exists and the one I specified? I choose his CW version because he had his signature win there and had enough size without it being too much of a burden.

Never really a match-up I've thought about. I think the Ref would be huge under modern rules. I think Steve Smoger should be the ref for this since both guys are known inside fighters. Jack has most of the physical advantages and let's be honest if there is one Heavyweight capable shutting down Toney's inside game, Jack Johnson might the guy.

The more I think about it the more I'm leaning Johnson taking a spoilerific split decision nobody ever watches twice.

Johnson, decision ... what did Toney do better ? likely a surgical match up ..

I'd favor the guy who doesn't have to learn 90+ years of rule changes during the fight.

Jack Johnson... a fat middleweight is in trouble against him.

I agree with a few of the posters here. Jack Johnson was a magnificent boxer for his time, but the game has evolved. Some let a boxers nostalgic greatness cloud their judgement in comparison to other modern greats.. I'd have to go with my boy JT in this one
