The main event reminds me of David Avanesyan vs Josh Kelly. Unfortunately do not think Cordina has great chances of winning this fight. The undercard is so poor that Eddie Hearn should be ashamed.
Undercard is truly shocking considering Eddie apparently left Sky so he could make the big fights that would otherwise be impossible. I'm just tuning in for the main event, suspect a lot of people will do the same. Joe Cordina talent wise is the best of that years crop of Olympians along with Buatsi. He really is a superb boxer with great timing and balance but unfortunately for a variety of reasons until now it has not really happened for him. He is sadly very injury prone. He's had a stop start career because of it. He also (oddly to me) did not get much of the limelight or attention when he did fight compared with the likes of Josh Kelly, Buatsi, Okolie, or even Fowler who is awful in every department in comparison and since then has been shown to be at best British level. Currently he does not have any sort of profile at all or much of a fanbase. His social media following is really very poor considering how long he has been pro and all the fights he has had on Sky, plus being an Olympian. He is obviously not the best self promoter in the world either but I still can't help feeling he did not get the initial push from Matchroom his talent deserved. Hope he wins on Sat as if he does not hard to see him having a successful career.
This fight literally has 0 attention. Is actually a decent fight. I am sure the bots will be loaded up so twitter has it trending come 9pm. Everyone joining in the conversation about Zelfa Barrett vs some fella no one has heard of
Sky would be hammering this - they’d have Cordina on Sky Sports News all week and going down Memory Lane with Calzaghe and other Welsh former champs.
Eddie Hearn needs to pull on his working clothes and start filling his role as a boxing promoter. He has to go out and sell his product.
Cordina is actually a decent, watchable fighter. I am surprised this fight doesnt have more hype, but he is still in the building phase. I think he wins a decision here, but potentially gets dropped at some point.
The problem that Eddie has is that not everyone has Twitter (myself) nor do they have access to a forum such as this whereas Sky Sports is far far more accessible to the average bloke into sport (myself). From having 100% coverage and adverts during Fight Week (Sky), in comparison, DAZN is probably 10% (at best!) in the consciousnesses of the sporting public. Eddie has scored a massive Own Goal with his move but my gut feeling is is that the plain bad old ego blocks everything out that should be setting off serious alarm bells. It's ok for a super fight like Canelo/GGG or Canelo/Bivol as they sell whatever platform (same with AJ) but the rest of the schedule? C'mon...
How much "marketing" do you need to do to replace adverts during ever other over break in the Test Cricket, and the press conference etc featuring on Sky Sports news? I am guessing a fair whack.
Cordina looked like a corpse at the weigh in. He has zero momentum and his career to date has been dogged with injury, warm up fights and inactivity. Massive talent though and he could put it all together tomorrow night, I'm worried it's too much for him.
I've written so many times about this and I know many are in agreement. Hearn utilised Sky perfectly but without it (and on an edge case streaming app its going to be a massive struggle). These fights are going ahead without any fanfare at all, Ryder v Jacobs being an obvious example. I mean how many new subscribers is DAZN pulling from this Cording card. Hearn played his part. But do people really think that Whyte headlined 6 or so PPVs on Sky because of Eddie. No it was because of the constant main event programming 'Whyte Hot', gloves are off, SSN and Jim White etc that made the bloke a name. Sky need plaudits for making Whyte a star because it was a complete myth. DAZN can't do that
Agree 100%, add to the fact he’s got every major promoter/network now actively working against him it’s going to be a struggle.
We get answers on whether Eddie Hearn is the real deal ? Will he - as Frank Warren has done on several occasions - fight when it gets really hard ?
Im a fan of Cordina, think he's the goods. Just had a bit on the 15/2 TKO, never know with the old British stoppage.
