He was a good radio commentator and was rightly praised for that when Matchroom signed him but it just doesn’t work for TV which we weren’t to know at the time.

Legs are shaky Adam, legs are shaky.

Costello was the GOAT. Until he swallowed that matchroom script whole.

I rewatched Williams - Potter recently with the main man and Jim Watt behind the mic - Adam's commentary was actually decent back in the day before all this Matchroom carry on went to his head.

At least Smith can change his tone and show some excitement. Costello is as boring as they come. Him and Andy Lee on comms could send a glass eye to sleep.

Costello would have the same tone if he was commentating on an Okolie points win or a Wilder knockout.

Smith is exactly the same with his darts commentary 'Two warriors putting it all on the line on the oche' and 'Michael Van Gerwin came up the hard way and used to look like Russell Brand at 16 years of age'

Adam Smith gets a lot of stick but he's passionate about the sport which comes across in his commentary. Personally, I prefer that over Costello's more articulate nature. That is more suited to the radio because we can't see the action happening.

I miss Paulie Malignaggi on the co-commentary though. They also need to stop with the fighters being on commentary like Buatsi was yesterday. For some reason Sky and DAZN seem to do this often, especially with the female fights. Makes no sense to me.

I was trying hard to watch the fight last night, but couldn't keep my eyes open, I remember drifting off and being really irritated by Smith's commentary even as I was asleep. He's probably a nice bloke and works hard for Sky, but there's something about his voice when he's commentating that I find really grating. When he's doing preflight interviews he sounds fine, it's just this overly enthusiastic commentary style I can't stand.

I prefer a commentator who is enthusiastic. A commentator where you as a viewer can feel that the person is passionate about what he / she is commentating. Costello could just as well comment on an exhibition with dogs or cats. His tone is completely the same.

If you miss Paulie Malignaggi then buy a subscription to PROBOX TV (22.50 US Dollars for one year). Maglignaggi's wonderful humor together with his razor sharp analyzes are worth the money.
